CBRD BBK Full vs Evo 9 stock turbo

Had another car in last week to upgrade to the CBRD BBK Full.

The *only* power mod change was moving from the stock Evo 9 turbo to the BBK Full. Even kept the stock (unported) cast 02 housing. So the turbo really was the only power mod change. (we upgraded the injectors)

2006 Evo 9 GSR

Mods:

RC 1200cc injectors
Perrin Fuel Rail
CBRD BBK Full with porting
Full exhaust with test pipe
K&N cone air filter
HKS Mivec cams
GM 3 port boost solenoid using ECU-controlled boost
100 oct (for both stock turbo and BBK)

Stock 02 housing (unported)
Stock LICP
Stock UICP
Stock FMIC

So a very mild "build"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

First I dialed in the boost to be as close to possible peak as it was when I tuned the car with the stock Evo 9 turbo. I tuned it as close as possible, but the BBK actually ended up with slightly lower peak boost. 27psi versus 27.5 psi. Up top I tried to maintain the peak boost as much as possible with the BBK which it did pretty well considering the lack of flow mods. On the stock turbo you will see it drops in boost starting at 6,000 rpm, despite being at 100% duty cycle.

Here is the boost chart: (BBK solid, Stock turbo dotted)

And here are the power curves overlayed: (BBK solid, Stock turbo dotted)

As you can see, the BBK gains everywhere, with a *slight* loss in spool over the stock evo 9 turbo. Approx 40whp gains at 7,000 rpm.

Now that the straight comparison was over, I cranked the boost up 1.5 psi on the BBK to 28.5 psi: (BBK solid, Stock turbo dotted)

And here are the power curves overlayed: (BBK solid, Stock turbo dotted)

386whp / 358wtq

Keep in mind this is far from being an "optimized" setup for this turbo but the straight gains over the stock turbo are great!

Great results for little mods.

FMIC should really help.

That's what you call "area under the curve" folks.

mike, what other products would you say optimize the use of the bbk full turbo. i want to start preparing myself for the bbk by getting the proper bolt ons first. what would you suggest? I was looking into cams and im not sure if i should go with the s1's or the s2's. would the s2's and the extra 400 for the beehive kit be worth the money for the increase in performance over the s1s. What other things would you recommend? thanks mike
