Waterproof stereo question

In a few weeks a bunch of friends and I are going to go float the salt river. its about 5 hours of just floating and drinking from top to bottom(dont worry we already have a DD) I have done it before and I always wanted to bring a stereo so there would be music to listen to.
aside from just bringing a shower radio where the battery would just die in an hour and it would barely be loud enough to hear. I was thinking about trying to build some sort of a stereo system with a crappy head unit, car speakers and some type of battery and just build it into a cooler.
does anyone have any experience with this, or even know how I would go about building it, what would be needed?.. price is also a very large part of this after all it will just be a novelty item used on the river and at the pool.
any help would be appreciated.

I guess your main question is.. how many battery's to last for 5 hours of music.. Amp and sub? or just door speakers?

why not just waterproof a boom box instead of re-inventing the wheel? D cells are easier to drag around than motorcycle batteries, and cheaper to replace when they run dry...

How would I waterproof a boom box?

I was just thinking it would be very convenient to have a cooler and stereo in one

^^ Buy a ruggedized/waterproof/water-resistant boom-box, wrap it in a waterproof bag, and...put it in your cooler?

I think what would be cooler than a cooler is to have it sitting in its own floaty (maybe a life preserver, water wings, ??? get creative...) moored to your tube...it could be your music dingy...

Buy a boombox and wrap it in saran wrap, or a big ziploc bag..

They sell boombox's that can get somewhat wet, not submerged, but can still get wet. I know they used to have those Sony Sports boombox's that were bright yellow, those could get splashed and work just fine.

That would definatly be the easier way, instead of trying to build something with a boat head unit, boat speakers, and batteries.

I think I may have found a good solution:
buy water proof boat speakers
get one of the water tight cases you can put an iPod in and use my old iPod then i just need to figure out a way to power the speakers.. i think it would probs be the cheapest and prob best way b/c i would have so much music to choose from.
so it would pretty much be this:

and this for my ipod:
http://www.drypodcase.com/
anyone have any ideas for a power source?

^^ Like I said if you really want to do what I think you want to do, get a boom box. That's what they are, i.e. a mobile, ruggedized (to varying degrees) contraption featuring a head unit, speakers, and batteries. They are engineered a bit better than your Frankenstein cooler. So if this is just an exercise in engineering and you feel like building stuff out of a cooler just to say you did it, go ahead. I challenge you to create something better than could ever possibly done with a boombox and the same amount of attention though...otherwise what's the point? you will have failed...

However...if you feel like making a cool little mobile music player that is water resistant/proof, get a boom box, put it in a water-tight vessel of some kind, think of somthing creative to float it with (pontoons? Tom Sawyer raft? rubber ducky?) and float that thing down the river lol...hell everyone wear little fire helmets with sirens and lights and loudspeaker microphones and do karaoke whilst doing so...
