nice . i did my car pc setup last year. https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sa...ocal-only.html check out. let me know if u need help finding stuff. not to pull ur leg, but i would use windows instead of linux since their are more app available for windows, and u can use evoscan or datalogging software in windows. before i did my setup i ran linux ice with nghost as my frontend. it ran flawlessly, but it was holding me down as i couldn't find enough support for drivers and logging software.. lets see how it works out with u. how are u channeling ur audio. are u using a head unit or amp????

 

thanks for replies guys. boot time is about 2min. linux works nice and quickly- i see no need to use windows. however i am running evoscan nicely in virtualbox until i play around with wine more (hindered by dotnetfx 3.5 compatibility). opensource provides me with many options (view my desktop below). audio is channeled through an amp. more details and pics to come!

Tell us some more about that hvac relocation you did ! is it custom ore the orbital one?

- I bought an extra radio bezel from www.mitsubishiparts.net for about 30 bucks.
- Cut it down, using proper tools to get nice edges, to fit inside the radio relocation kit.
- Painted black so it blends in nicely with the black surround.
- Then I bought the climate stickers separate. Used a razor to square the edges.

Great Job on the install. I'm thinking about doing the same thing in the next couple months, but there are couple things I don't get.

- In order to use the sound card, you need an amp correct? What kind do i need to power the stock speakers and tweeters?

- AM/FM or digital radio. What do you use for that?

- Finally, I read somewhere that you can setup the CarPC to not shutdown everytime you turn you car off, but go to suspend mode for quicker boot up, is the possible?

Thanks for the comments! I am happy to provide any help I can.

1. Amp is needed to power the speakers. I used a Rockford Fosgate 4 Channel (400watt?) amp that I had laying around. I simply connected the PC to the Amp using AV cables.

2. AM/FM/HD/Satelite radio is a possiblity in both Linux or Windows CarPC's. I recommend using a USB one if you do. I personally have not had a need for Radio with the mass amounts of MP3's ive been able to load. I also used my phone for wireless connectivity and internet radio.

3. As far as bootup/shutdown/ and amp "thump" fix, this can all be done w/ the m2atx power supply. It is a must-have for car pc's. I have mine set to stay on for 10 min after i shut the car off. This allows me to pump gas without rebooting.

I used red hat linux years ago. Probably would be blind in linux now days. I really like how the icons are on your desktop. Dont think that would be as easy with windows.. How do u fade the sounds from front and back? Can you get a fancy dolby 5.1 (or 7.1) sound card to run surround sound? i think that is really cool. I think im still stuck in the previous generation. Oh well im still going to do a writeup / log of my install.
