Problems seeing the radio in the lower cubby

I just installed a new radio (Alpine CDE-136BT), and the contrast is so high, that the screen bleeds through to all of the options that are on the display, show up all the time. If I lean down and look at the radio dead on, it's fine, but with it installed in the lower area, it's hard to read anything. I changed the dimmer setting to always on, but that only adjusts the button backlight. The manual doesn't show how to adjust the contrast in the display, and I haven't contacted Alpine yet, but I figured I would ask here since moving the radio down is popular and many of you are using other Alpine radios. Is this a common issue with having the radio in the lower cubby? I would rather keep it down there for security issues.
