Rear crash beam, results are in..

Saw this on another forum.

Everyone fears removing their rear crash beam for the jdm rear, truth is, its just 5mph beam. Its not meant to take a huge impact.

As you can see the beam did nothing to help this impact, granted this was a hard impact. Another guy in a stolen vehicle rammed into this evo at highspeed, most likely over 80 mph.

If there is anyone worried about the safety of the rear of their vehicle:

A. You should get a a tubular crash beam which is not tested in the first place.
B. A trunk cage will not only help with rigidity but also create a stronger rear end.

I spent 3 days cutting & welding my rear crash beam to make it fit under my JDM 8 bumper... Even with having a trunk cage, I just didn't feel safe without the crash beam! For how thick & solid it is, it would absorb a fair amount of the initial impact. Gotta remember, the more metal there is to get crushed, the less energy will be transmitted to the passengers. And aside from all that, can u imagine getting your car smashed like that Evo in the pic & having the insurance company telling u your claim is being denied because u removed the crash beam!? That would be pretty devastating financially for most people..

IMO the crash beam is more about spreading the impact over more of the structure of the car. Obviously that means on slower speed impacts you get a lot of unnecessary damage, but on high speed impacts I'd want the force spread as evenly over the entire structure as possible.

Our cars are ridiculously unsafe. Exhibit A.: ^^^ (OP). Taking out the crash beam is like someone with alcohol poisoning taking another shot of vodka... just don’t do it.

this car accident was at speeds way higher than a normal crash test for getting rear ended (the evo was at a stop) and to get rear ended at 80+ i think this is not bad.

Another thing is the spare tire is part of the rear structure to aid in impact protection

Just looking at the photo makes me swallow hard. Perhaps a tubular rear beam will help.

pics like that scare me especially when my kids travel with me 80-90% of the time. i want a JDM rear but not having the beam worries me. although during impacts this big the beam does nothing.

Dont let the JDM bumper stop you they do make aftermarket crash beam for the JDM bumper. But I know someone who rolled one multiple times and walked away fine. I feel safe in my evo

exactly, the beam is only for 5mph bumps but im sure it has to react during something like this but if the force is big enough the beam isnt really going to help
