'05 gsr halogen headlights to oem hid headlights with full function

Ive read countless threads and posts on this subject... I dont want an aftermarket kit. I dont want to cut plugs off or depin my 4-pin connector and install them into the 8-pin, that leaves me with no fogs still and no leveling. I need some insite from people who have either delt with this conversion or who have had a good deal of experience with the stock harness. I have oem 2003 headlights on their way. I have the chance to buy an ix engine/headlight harness that had hid's for a good deal. I assume I can't just swap in that harness due to it being a mivec harness and mine is obviously not. The '05 it would seem has to have a harness swap from another '05, infact only an ssl or having to change things from the mr 6 speed harness? An 03-04 wont due with not having acd. So short of buying an ssl harness from the dealer due to not seeing any used online, can I remove the pieces/wiring from the ix harness and install them in my '05...? I want everything to work and work like factory, hid, fog and leveling. I have read that the plugs and harness's for the leveling and fog switch's are present in the dash harness. Where do those harness's end? Is the main engine harness seperated from the fuse box/headlight harness at all? Id also plan on either installing the correct wires and realys/fuses into the fuse box or using the one from the ix harness. I've also done a little searching for some wiring schematics but came up pretty dry. I might have some means of accessing all-data, would they have them? I am a fully certified Detroit Diesel/Freightliner technician so I wouldnt say I'm worried about this task, just asking for some input from guys who've had more experience!! Thanks in advance.

I've looked into it for my IX GSR and it seems like a huge pain...

Interested to see what people have to say.

There is no way... Starting from scratch I could see that. If I had another harness to pull the wires, connectors and ect from it cant be that difficult.

if you actually look at the schematics, there are specific relays/etc that you will have to transfer over. it is way too big of a pain imho. i would personally just go aftermarket hid and call it a day.

if you are good at reading electrical schematics, you MAY figure it out but not worth the time and effort just to convert from oem halogens to oem hid.

I will completely agree that the consensus is, this is not worth the time. But for me it is. No offense to anyone but I have a large problem with doing things half assed. Not being the first owner on my dsm, or my evo I've spent a decent amount of time de-halfassing them both. The evo is not a race car right now, just a dd. My wife uses it to transport our son and commute to work. I know the time and effort spent doing this could be put to use in other places, but the fact is I dont like the stock hallogens or the hallogen housings. I dont feel like being illegal with just throwing bulbs and ballasts in them. I've had more than my fair share of run-ins with the police and I dont want my wife dealing with it either, plus I'd have to deal with it when registration time comes due. So my other options, use the oem housing with a 9006 to ds2 adaptor? But that still leaves the foglights inop, which is another large contrubuting factor to me switching headlights. Ive seen some write-ups on making them work but in all honesty the wiring looked terrible and there was 4 or 5 relays added and all bundled together. I have no problem reading and following a wiring schematic, I actually feel im pretty damn good at it considering I get payed for it. Depining, adding wires, relays, fuses, ect is simple and does not bother me. I just have no schematics in hand, or another harness at the moment to start looking at. In the end I guess my out look on the subject is I can spend a little extra time and money and make it look oem clean, or save a buck and a minute and just throw it together.

So with that said its looking like people feel it can be accomplished. So I'll be the guinea pig. Anyone have any ideas where I can find the schematics?

I'm assuming you were looking at this thread: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...d-w-fogs.html?

If you do it, please try to document and do a write-up if possible.

Ya thats the one, no disrespect to the op. He wanted it done and did it, and thats great. Thats just too messy for me. I pride myself on making my car look clean. If people are gonna follow this I'll do a full write up and take pictures. For anyone looking for schematics, evoscan ftmfw! http://www.evoscan.com/vehicle-manuals
Im pretty confident with my knowledge and having schematics/wiring harness' infront of me it won't be too difficult.

I'm definitely going to follow this thread..

I'm an Electrical Engineer so I know just a little about schematics/wiring, but the combination of laziness plus not having a DD to get to work in is making me hesitant about undertaking this process..

So I spent the better part of yesterday working on the car. To all the haters out there.

OEM non-hid headlights equipped on a '05 gsr.

After some tedious work and lots of sweat in the utah sun the swap is complete.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pictures.

These are fully functional just as they would be on any oem hid evo. Levelers and foglights work all through the oem switches. The foglight indication light in the cluster functions. I noticed while going through the hid engine harness I purchased that everything is the same for the front harness. All I had to swap was the hid fuseblock, front harness and the harness section running to the cabin. It took me a little longer than it could for most due to the fact that I had to wire in a few plugs here and there that had been cut off. Removal and installation is pretty explanatory but I can definitely get some pictures and do a full write up if people want/need it.

Parts list:
OEM HID headlights/bulbs/ballasts $500-$800
HID fuse block and harness $150-$300
Foglight and Leveling switches $30

In the end it was definitely not as bad as everyone has made it out to be. In my opinion its been some of the best time and money I've invested into the car so far. I through in some 3k hid fogs while I was at it. In the end im very happy with the install. Anyone has any questions feel free to ask or pm me.

I think it's awesome you pulled this off. I've wanted the HID w/Fog in my IX GSR for awhile. I never even looked into the SSL cause the '06s have leather anyways, I don't want the sunroof, and I didn't want the stock stereo system even the SSL one. Now I wish I would have got an SSL while I had the chance.

I'm going to have to start looking for the parts from part outs. I see you mentioned you had the chance to get a IX harness. Curious if you used it, and if so what exactly did you have to use off of it and what were the differences between the HID harness and the GSR/RS harness.

Aquiring the headlamps, bulbs, ballasts and switches seem straight up. The harness and fuseblock is where I have no idea what I need. Any insight would be awesome. Thanks for your work.
