HKS turbo timer won't work

I have an HKS Type-0 turbo timer installed on my Eclipse using a harness adapter which clipped up perfectly. It's properly grounded, the timer turns on and allows me to select any option, view voltage, etc., but when I turn the key off, the engine shuts down immediately. I didn't touch the handbrake wire (it's an automatic, hence I don't use the handbrake when parked) but I'm reading that it's meant to be used as a cautionary feature only. Should I connect that in order to make it work? Or perhaps an unswitched power source? Let me know if you have any idea what's causing this..

from my experience, you need to have that ebrake cable hooked up or it wont work. its mainly a safety feature but without it, it wont start the countdown
