I have recently purchased a noisy tc from from a member on this board. The original intension was to salvage the housing so that I have an extra tc to put in a quaife front diff. After opening up the the tc, i noticed that there were a lot of shavings in the oil that remained in the tc. So i did more investigation by taking out the front diff/viscous coupler unit, and pulled out the front diff housing. I noticed that one of the shims that goes between the front diff and the coupler was off and got cut into 2 pieces, this led me to think that that piece of plastic shim (or what looks to be plastic), can come off very easily. I will post some pic when later on tonight or tomorrow.

could the shim coming apart be a major problem... I'm not an expert by any means.. just trying to understand what would cause this and if this has happen to anyone else.

Don't know if this is a common problem, but if it is, there is not need to replace the entire tc, just replace the shim and clean out the tc.

I was driving my car a really messed up road. I hit this one really bad dip. Must have been like 5 mins until I heard that Whistling sound again. O by the way this is my 3rd transfer case. Mitsu warrantied both of them, but told me that they will not replace it again. So my question is does the conditon of the road actually effect the Transfer case.

For clarification: BLOWN TC = car isn't drivable, due to the catastrophic failure of a component.

My TC didn't "blow". There was no obvious band or clunk. It just started whining really loudly. It started happening at first only during WOT at >3000 rpms. Then, it was happening all of the time. I took it in two days after I heard the noise, and the dealership took oil out of it and it was like a meat grinder of metal They replaced it under warranty. The noise sounded like something was out of alignment or there was eccentric force, causing uneven wear. This could be the result of the shim problem discussed above, but who knows....

weird, ive got a buddy with a modified evo and he's on his 2nd as well. if anyone has read up on the new '05 mr, mitsubishi has put a rev limiter on them now, making so, if your clutch is in and your pushing the throttle, it will not let you take it past 5,000 or 5,500 one of those 2 i dont remember off the top of my head, so the question i'm asking myself is, does mitsubishi know something that we don't and they are trying to cover it without a recall? because my buddy has paid for those transfer cases out of his pocket because his car had a aftermarket clutch. bye bye to mr warranty
