diff MR and evo 6.5 turbo
#2
The compressor cover is slightly different, the hot side on both have 10.5cm2 nozzle area however the USDM turbo has a revised wastegate flapper.. The TME turbo has a Titanium impeller and shaft (I think the non TME has an Iconnel impeller but I'm not sure) the USDM MR turbo does not have any titanium components... I'm going from memory but I think I'm pretty close..
There are apparently 2 or 3 versions of the turbo used on the Evo 6 (and TME 6.5) however I am referring to the TD05HR-16G6-10.5t (05 and USDM MR) and the TD05HRA-16G6-10.5t (TME 6.5)

WHAT.... Why?. You can get the turbo from forced performance for 1g.

Yeah you can get the equivalant to it (not sure if its an OE 6.5 TME turbo, but its definitely the same parts) for $950 or so from http://linux.forcedperformance.net/m...ode=Lancer_EVO
If your creative and troll Ebay, an Evo VII RS2 turbo turns up on occasion, its a TD05HRA-16G6-9.8t, I got one for around $350 or so, and upgraded it with the 10.5t hot housing..
I actually revised the turbo again later with an 05/MR compressor cover which has some differences to the older compressor covers..

I'm wondering if there is any merit to Al's assumption that the USDM MR's turbo is upgraded in some other manner... it seems to be making better power than a the older 10.5T variants.

So far the evidence and measurements I've taken shows some difference between an 05/MR compressor cover and the earlier turbo.. So there's probably some truth in his assumption.. (I think I actually got one of the first MHI Compressor cover replacements for that turbo) It really looks very similar to any of the earlier, the casting has some variation, overall exterior size is pretty much the same, but the interior volume is slightly different and the slot for the compressor scroll appears to be a little larger than the earlier compressor (I can't get a measurement for it because its in a tough spot to get a caliper inside)
I do have one of these new MR Compressor covers, a Titanium CHRA, and a TME 10.5t housing.. Time will tell, I was hoping to aquire another CHRA so I could have both a TME and my Hybrid side by side for testing and possibly building some compressor maps.

How about Evo 8 MR titanium turbo? In Japan and UK you can get those as well.
Why does everyone keep talking about 6.5 turbo, because it's cheap or because they keep forgetting Evo 8 also has Ti as an option?

They keep talking about the TME tubo because it has a slightly larger exhaust housing compared to the Evo 7,8 turbo's.
Also there are two different types of TME turbos, the GSR and RS.
The GSR uses a 15GK turbine and the RS a 16G, both titanium.
Also the evo6 turbos are both the same for the GSR and RS except that the RS has a titanium turbine.
