You need to use the slide hammer once the driver's axle is already out. You will see a shaft inside the tranny with a threaded hole, this is were you screw the slide hammer in and pull the shaft out. The throw out bearing needs a long flathead screwdriver to release, there is an inspection hole on the bottom of the tranny in which you will see the throw out bearing. You need to wedge the flathead in between the bearing and the pressure plate, then pull on the clutch fork with your hand until the pressure plate spring fully compresses. At that point you will use the flathead to hold the pressure plate spring fully compressed down, next you will tap on the clutch fork with a hammer until it releases the bearing. SOunds complicated but its not, just may take some time to release. Some come out easy , some are a pain.

All you need is a bolt to screw into the output shaft in order to use the slide hammer(I believe one of the bolts holding your downpipe to the hanger will do).

I used the outline in the "How to" section, had links to service manual sections.

The tranny was a b*tch to do cause the rear end kept getting hung up on the rear crossmember. If you have a couple people helping you it should be too difficult to handle the tranny. A jack and a piece of wood is needed to hold your motor when you drop the tranny.

Good luck dude, it was a JOB!!!

well...what was planed for a 2 days thing turned out to be 3 days for me...took me like hour to get the TO out...and like a whole day to get the tranny up...man that thing is heavy....if you are on jacks you will need to have one really strong person to handle the tranny..cuase we tried w. 2 ppl and theres simple not enough room for both to move around and manuver the tranny...i even got a motorcycle jack from a friend and still had alot fo probs....thats the hardest part doing it on jacks...its juts a lump of heavy *** metal...lol...i did many honda trannies before this..and i though it was a peice of cake..well it wasnt....gl man..

Before you try and release the throw out bearing practice with your new one first. then you will understand how it works and how you need to release it. just stick the new TO in the your new pressure plate and try and get it out, like the previous person said, pretty simple once you figure it out. we use a jack to get the tranny up there. the hardest thing to do is cram it in there and not knock off the crappy throwout bearing spring. it will probably take a couple tries, but you need to keep looking through the spy hole in bottom of the tranny to make sure it didn't get knocked off. once you get it close, with the bellhousing over the pressure plate, you will want to get another jack. use a piece of wood under the engine to get everything lined up better. it will also get the tranny up off the frame which will enable you to wiggle it around more. just keep an eye on the TO clip though.

We've done 7 clutches on jack stands now, sure a lift would be nice but we can get it done in 3 hours. Also, make sure you read the instructions in the how-to section. they are very good.

A hint of advice for you with the trans. Go slow and dont try to muscle it around. Use jacks on the trans to lift and oil pan to lower and tilt the motor. This method works once you get it down. Good luck, by the time you get done you will be sick of it.

oh im sure its gonna be a pain. I am having a guy that has built a drag starion with a 4g63 in it with a powerglide tranny. Like buschurs. He also has a 11 sec Mirage hatchback with a 4g63 with a 20g on it. oh and he also owns a wicked white evo.

I keep hearing people say that they would never do this on jack stands... is this do to the weight of the tranny, or something else? It's been a while, but I've done several 3000 VR4 clutch jobs. I'm told the Evo tranny is no heavier than the VR4. Maybe because I'm an ape, or maybe because I grew up lifting truck and tractor parts, but I didn't think the VR4 was that damn heavy. I understand that the release mechanism is a pita... maybe it is that coupled with a tranny that most are not used to.

Anyone done both a VR4 and an Evo clutch?

i didnt think it was that hard.. once you figure out the tob its easy.. 1 jack under the motor,
a trans jack, an extra set of hands and youll get it up there in 10 min.. pretty much like any other dsm..

I'm doing my clutch this weekend... starting about noon friday, I wanna have all the stuff tore off by friday evening and hit it hard saturday morning, I am installing the ACT kit with a new prostreet flywheel, and while im under there im putting on a new TBE and 4 new brake pads. I have never done anything like this before and hopefully now that i will have a good setup i will never have to do it again... I enlisted the help of my uncle who has spent years rebuilding mopar performace car (i know i know totally different but hes srtonger than me and can lift the tranny lol) and a friend that is currently in school to be a mechanic. I got 4 whole days to do this and I figure we will probably need all of them. I really hope to be done by noon on monday if not sooner. I'm sure there will be several temper tantrums, thoughts of y I am paying this much for this car, pepperoni pizzas, and cases of beer. What I would like to find on here is someone who has done this before that I could IM or call incase I get snagged on sumthin'... I will be on jackstands, but I will have about every tool known to man at my disposal, so I figure in 4 days I should be able to get it done... Im also throwing on a new SS clutch line while everything is torn apart so help with that would be greatly appreciated. Oh and if there is ne1 in the western NC area that feels froggy enough to come help... be my guest!!! all the pizza and beer you can stand lol.
