Welded Viscous Coupling Question

I have seen it done on DSM's before but want to make sure everything is the same on the Evo's. How is it done procedure wise on the Evo?

Also, does anyone know how much Mitsu charges for a new coupling that I can buy to get welded? Or does anyone know of a cheaper place to get one? Id like to get my car dynoed but don't feel like spending $250-$300 to get them to convert it for me.

The EVO's center diff viscous coupling is actually in the transfer case. From the diagrams I've seen, it looks to be part of the front diff housing. Here's the link. Page 2 has an exploded view of the transfer case internals.

If you want to eliminate it, give AMS or Buschur a call. I know they 2-wheel dyno their shop EVOs.

You can also check with TurboTrix, they might have a solution for you.

On a DSM it is pretty easy, that PDF makes this look considerably harder... Anyone have a How To or anything like that to do it?

Yeah, on a DSM, removing the VC was really easy. But you'll have to at least take the passenger side axle off to get to the EVO VC.

On an evo you actually have to destroy a front differential to modify it for 2 wheel dynoing. Thats probibly, what a $1000 piece or more?

The center diff and viscous coupler are in the tranny on an evo. The tcase houses the front differential and the ring and pinion to drive the rear driveshaft. You also have to remove both the axles on an evo, have a slide hammer with a 8mm thread on it to remove the cross shaft from the tranny. Basicly its not an easy job, requires a special tool, and requires a modified differential that has to be installed to convert to 2wd.

Not an easy job for your average person. I would highly suggest having a shop that is very epxerienced with Evos doing this for you.

Are you sure about that? Look at page 2 of this diagram. The VC is right there in the front differential housing.

http://www.seedwiki.com/page.cfm?doc...ile=cp_lsd.pdf

From the diagram on page 22A-3 of the shop manual (item 10), it shows the VC to be in the t-case.

Gotta disagree with the destroy the front diff statement. I have changed the clutch on the car so I understand how to pull axles and half shafts but thanks for your concern

No no. I mean you have to destroy a front diff because you have to weld one up solid in order to convert the car to fwd. Once you weld a diff, its most cetainly never going back to normal...... I'm not saying anything about your ability to change it. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Your definatly right about the VCU. Its been like 8 months since I disassembled an Evo Tcase, I forgot its in there.

Your not welding the front diff anyways... you are welding a small part inside the transfer case. Yes you will half-*** destroy (Depends on what you consider destroy) a part but most people use an extra one unless they always want to be locked in true 4x4 mode. I would buy another one and weld that one up. Not a whole diff... but thanks for your input I suppose.

anyone know if you can dyno an MR FWD by perhaps pulling the e brake to disable the acd, and disconnecting the driveshaft just in case?

i have a 2wd dynopak dyno and it would be great if i could dyno my MR myself.

Does the center diff fully disengage when the e-brake is up?
