Buddy Club 264/272 cams installed

Hi all,

Got my Buddy Club cams installed at DSG in Norwood, MA (www.dentsport.com). Great guys, highly recommend them. If you're in MA or nearby, check out Alex and Bill... Got the cams from Gruppe-S, another class act.

Car is untuned at this point, with minimal adjustments via SAFCII.

Some observations:

Idle is pretty much fine. Slight lope. You can hear the pulses at the exhaust, but it's subtle. On a side note, my exhaust has gotten much louder, but even before the cams. I'm going to have to do something about this before I get a ticket lol.

My SAFCII now reads ~32 HZ at idle, whereas it only read 25 before the cams. Vacuum is now at 15 inHg vs 18 prior. My peak Karmann readings are much higher as well, in the high 1600s, whereas I would only hit high 1500s or low 1600s before. The sound has changed as well. More angry. I like it, but it's too loud (due to the exhaust, not necessarily the cams).

Car is now a beast in the midrange. Top-end is stronger, and boost onset hits harder and earlier. I think with a flash it will just be awesome, even more of a good thing. Even off boost (below 3000) feels better, but you aren't in that rpm range very long with any amount of throttle.

Hopefully I can get a flash and dynotune soon to verify the butt dyno. Not sure if I'll make it to the dragstrip, my stock clutch has 35K miles and I know it will slip if I launch it.

Take care,

FB

Hi,

What are the specs of your Buddy Club cams e.g duration and lift etc.

Hi,

Gruppe-s posted these in their forum:

https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...1&page=1&pp=15

I believe they're identical specs to HKS in terms of duration and lift. People have been getting great numbers with the GSC and there was speculation the ramp rate or something to that effect was different. Not sure on the Buddy Club...

Hey Q, they didn't find any exhaust leaks. I drove it again Friday, decided it was too loud and threw the silencer in. Haven't driven with the silcencer, but it sure does idle quieter, lol. There seems to be tons of backpressure now, with all the exhaust forced out the little silencer opening, lol. I wonder if my Random Tech cat came apart or something, my car is louder than yours with a test pipe??

Update,

Got dynoflashed and my car made 331 HP and 338 TQ.

Very happy. Car is a beast, but it's still loud as hell, lol. I'll have to figure out something with the exhaust, which will cost some ponies but provide some peace of mind...

Here's the chart with actual HP.

When I removed my RT high flow the cockpit sound level went down. Most likely due to the lack of turbulence caused by the cat. My rear exhuast note was slightly louder but not much. It is actually possible to have a conversation in my car on the highway with the test pipe.
You could always get an electronic cut-off valve and hook up the factory muffler. That way it runs quieter until you want to get on it, hit the switch and open the pipe and let it scream. The valves are about $190 from Summit Racing, manual ones are cheap at JC Whitney.

In your sig it doesn't mention a downpipe. You are probably losing some power if you don't have one. Also, his flash was done by Al at DynoFlash, maybe TT is more conservative.

my exhaust is 3" helix dp+3" magnaflow cat+3" RRE resonator + Esplier CB.

TT blamed the shortfall on the cat sighting back pressure.

TT said 11.5 afr across the band during dyno...told me to try random cat.

Hi,

I got the RT HF cat from nino's but I don't think they're around anymore...

Car is a beast, I love it. If I could just drive without expecting a ticket all the time I would be all set.

Take care,

Hi,

Inside the car is fine, it's a little loud at the rear of the car near the exhaust. I wouldn't want to be at a light with a cop behind me, heh.

I may add a resonator or two, and maybe switch to a diff muffler...

The valves would be pretty sweet too, I've seen the videos of CT9a...

Take care,

I have a Buschur turboback (Magnaflow muffler) with a Random Tech 3" cat and I don't think it's loud at all inside the car, even in my RS.

I'm thinking about getting similar exhaust setup as yours with Helix CB + random Tech Cat. Does your CB have resonator? I've seen both versions w/ and w/o resonator. From my experience resonator will minimize a lot of drooning on highway but not so much on street.

But Helix CB sounded sweet!!!

BTW, are you getting a CEL - P0300 after your cam install?

I got one right afterwards but went away next day. ..
