Quieting down Helix exhaust

Hi,

I did a search and read through a few threads on adding resonators.

First the background. I have Helix DP, RT HF Cat, and Helix CB. A few weeks ago, the exhaust got much louder. All of a sudden? Weird. I added 264i/272e cams, and it was very loud, so I put the silencer in. It's tolerable with the silencer, but it kills power quite a bit.

Soooo, if I add a resonator or two to the Helix CB, would it actually lower the volume? The other threads said it made it deeper, but didn't specify if it really helped lower the amplitude...

Another idea I've been considering is re-installing the stock cat, which I was planning on doing for my inspection in July. I think this will help with noise, emissions.

Finally, I skimmed an article in D-Sport about a different design silencer that was supposed to quiet everything down, but was more free flowing than the 1.5" diameter silencer that came with the exhaust, heh. Any experience with a similar product?

On a side note, my SES came on after adding the silencer. I'm pretty sure it's the P0420 code, but haven't confirmed yet.

Any input is appreciated.

TIA,

FB

I think that the stock cat would help quite things down. I have an AVO catback with Helix DP. All was good and quiet. After I added a Works HFC, that sucker got loud, but still sounded good.

Thanks guys.

What I meant is that the car got louder even before the cams, then even louder after installing them, heh.

It's fine with the silencer, but it's noticeably slower and I'm a little concerened about all the backpressure. Sounds like the engine is trying to breathe through a little straw, which it actually is I guess. Also sounds like ripping aluminum foil...

I tried to take the silencer out last night to see how bad it is (and drive with the untapped power avail), but that thing is kind of a PITA and couldn't get it out. I'll try again and may try the stock cat this weekend as well.

Any experience with installed resonators or the alternate less restrictive silencer products?

Last question on this topic:

My buddy at work suggested I drill some holes in the silencer.

Hmmmm, I wonder if that would work? I can probably buy a spare off someone in case it doesn't work well.

Any thoughts?

You may not like this option but what about buying a new 3" catback with a resonator? I had the Helix but it was too loud for my tastes. Now I have a Greddy Evo2 and I am content.

30lbs of sound deadening and I can't hear my exhaust at cruise. I got a Buschur magnaflow catback, Rally Cat (test pipe) and Works Downpipe, Hks 272 Cams. From the outside it is still loud, but during regular driving, its like it aint there. Ofcourse once I step on it, then even dead people can hear it.

My helix does not seem all that loud, but I am still using stock cams. Does a cam change really make that much of a difference? My setup is HKS DP, Works Hi-flow cat, and Helix catback. It ended up being much quieter than I initially expected it to be.

Hey guys,

Yeah, I'm considering getting another exhaust, but if I can modify it effectively for not too much $ then I'll be happy.

The sound deadening would help me, but I'm more worried about making it quieter to the police.

Cams did make it louder. My car is loud for some reason, I'll have to double-check for leaks. I rode in another members's car with Helix DP and CB, resonated test pipe, and HKS 264s and his car was quieter than mine??

I'm about to try drilling holes in the silencer for the true ghetto effect...

Thanks,

Bring to a shop have it welded in the straght section of the catback. Helix and bucshur are the only exhausts I know of without a neckdown, but Helix looks way better IMO
