Car not performing like others...

I live in Va, where we have 5 other evo's at our local shop. My 03 rally red (hks TBE, hks 272, dynoflash) performs very well against the two other cammed evos. They run the same mods but have intakes and a 264 intake cam. However on top end, from about the middle of 3rd gear up, they consistently pull on me.

Even before any of them were cammed, they still were able to pull on my car. I'm at a totaly loss as to why this happens...its been about a year..so I would think if I had a boost leak I would have realized it by now or blown a pipe.

This confuses the hell out of me....we went to the track tonite and I was only able to pull 8.3's at a best of 84mph. They were able to get 8.3's at 86 mph. Once we get into third gear they just start pulling on me pretty consistently.

Anyone have any ideas as to the reasoning behind this? Thanks for your help in advance.

What year are the other cars? You still could have a boost leak even though your not hearing it. Try a pressure test if u think it could be a leak. Also maybe try a compression test on all cylinders, u could find something.

Maybe their intakes? Do you have a panel filter? Do they have hard intercooler pipes and you don't? Do you all have the same flash? Running same boost levels? Using the flash for boost or MBC/EVC? If doing higher boost levels, do you have the same BOVs?

Where did you run the 1/8th? Was it at ODS? What shop are you referring to? I think you need to do some logging to see what's happening up top. I could help with that using my pocketlogger (I'm in Sterling), but wideband would be best. It appears to me that none of you are running as fast as you should, but I'm sure the power is just hidden beneath a poor setup or leak. Use my 8.1@84 with filter and S-AFC as a baseline...you will be much faster than that when you get the kinks worked out, since I did that locally.

I live in Roanoke, work at WeGoFast in salem.

The intakes do not make that much of a diff, and its not a tuning thing, before when the white car and mine were pretty much stock(just exhaust) the white one would always pull on mine. It's a very confusing thing.

The track we ran at last nite is not a track known for good times. I ran at the new shelor track and was able to pull 8.2's on stock clutch with 1.7 60's.
The car has run 7.8's with a TurboTrix tune on stock clutch. However the traps were only 81 at best!

BTW all of us are '03s.

I purchased this car from a friend of mine about 6 months ago, his user name is brandon I think. You guys may/may not recall him posting about the same problem.

did you a cylinder pressure test.. you might have slow car like me and so many others.. pressures should be around 180-190.. mine is between 148-151.. hence i have a slower evo..

If you're convinced it's not the tune, despite being no faster than my MR with S-AFC and filter, then I would check the cylinder pressure like DaFarmer said...

Still, even though your friend pulls on you, his et/mph are low, also, but maybe that's the "track that isn't known for good times."

The three evos in question ran again yesterday and laid down some better times
exvitermini ran a 8 flat at 85 with a 1.8 60 ft
one of the other evos ran a 7.8 with 1.8 60 ft at i think about 87.
I had a chance to drive my old car at the track. i droped it and the car got a lill sideways i chirped second pretty hard shifted around 7000rpms, chirped third and then the car just seems to run out of steam about halfway thur third lets call it 4800rpms. At the track while in third you can look up just see the other evos just start to pull right back on you. I am fairly sure on all this but if i got anything wrong exvitermini please chime in. like exvitermini said the car has always done this, for example on the highway i would pull are friends evo untill midway thur third and then you could just see him slowly gaining on you then pass you. I know the car is nice down low but on top it just falls off, this was when all we had was some exhaust work.

Did nothing else change this time at the track? They all just ran better with the same conditions/mods/tuning? 8.0 and 7.8 are better and much more inline with the mods, but it does seem weird that the one car gets pulled in 3rd. Do they all have the same cams, or does one have 264s while the other has 272s? Do they have the same tune? I asked a lot of questions up above, but none were answered, so I can't really provide suggestions.

yes, the other two cars have a 264 intake cam whereas I have straight 272's. however even in stock (only TBE) form the other two cars consistently pulled on mine from mid 3rd gear up.

This may not be the best advice but it may help some. The secret to power especially up top with the evos seems to be in the timing. I know David Buschur reccomends that you keep stock gears, but the testimony of such people Ted B. Shiv, Doug from Topspeed. It seems theres a lot to be had when you get into the timing. Grab some gears and some more tune time and maybe youll tighten it up a bit. Also, the 264s are closer to the stock cams and yeild alot more power on stock timing it seems over the 272s or in my case 280s. Well I hope this helps at all. But please remember I am just bench racing and if a tuner decides to chime in pick them over me.

All three cars are using mail in flashes from dynoflash. I had a turbotrix flash on it before i sold it to exvitermini and the car still felt week in third.

Its not just evos that start pulling it, its also happened last fall when i was racing two sti s at the track. This was before cams, cat delete and fuel pump. I would just walk away from them during 1st and 2nd and halfway thru third i could see them start to pull back up to me. I was trapping at 78 and they were trapping at 81 and they were stock.
