HKS 280s Cam Gear Settings
What are you running and why? I read Ted B's excellent review, but I don't think I want to run them advanced. I was thinking -4 and -1 to improve idle and reduce detonation. I am running a stand-alone Power FC for engine management.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Its funny, your not the first one I've heard say that about the 280 cams idling similar to stock..
The big issue is with the duration of the cams, its much harder to alter the timing to reduce overlap anyway, doing so should increase midrange torque, but I think "Straight up" is the common consensus so far.
I really need to put a set of 280s in my car and do a real review on them..

BadazzCR had a great series of posts with results of different settings for 280s on a stock turbo. I will be testing out different settings with my cams next week, but I am running an AMS 3071 kit, so results won't necessarily apply to a stock turbo.
I would start at 0/0, then try retarding them a little and then, when you get a setting you like, advance the exhaust cam by one or two degrees and see where you end up in both idle quality, spool, and top-end. That will be the approach I'm taking next week with my setup.
HKS 280s do seem to have a more noticeable effect on spoolup than the HKS 272s, which is probably why a lot of people are running them at 0/0. The stock turbo can't seem to move enough air to fully take advantage of the top-end offered by the 280s, therefore retarding the cam gear settings ends up costing more in low-end torque and spool than you end up gaining back in top-end power.

here you go.. if you feel like reading through the whole thread. I tested almost all the cam settings on the 280's when they cam out.
