Thats more like it.. the only time I've ever seen 27 degrees was on a race gas tune..

for the guy who was asking how surging feels...

He says, " I don't drive just at WOT, I have to modulate the throttle in boost in a corner." I am thinking, "WTF is going on, this is horrible." He drives it for 10 miles or so and says how impressed he is with how fast the car is, but the compressor surge isn't goign to cut it.

You know guys, I have let probably 6 guys drive this car since the 20G has been on it and nobody has had it surge. It is something to do with the technique of this high boost-part throttle driving style of a road racer. This turbo is NOT going to work if that is how you drive. Very odd.

If you want to know WHY it happens, check out the following:

Super Street article on turbo sizing
Turbodriven.com explains compressor wheels and surge lines
The turbo regal website explains compressor sizing

Compressor surge is a problem that affects most superchargers and develops when the supercharger is creating boost, but the throttle shaft is closed. Although not a problem on some low-boost (5psi or less) applications This condition can occur under deceleration or while shifting between gears, and can cause the car to sputter and chirp. Under surge, the compressor forces air into the closed throttle body until the pressure inside the throttle body is higher than the amount of pressure being created by the supercharger, and the air tries to pop backward through the supercharger. At that point, pressure is released inside the throttle body and the compressor forces air back through the supercharger and into the throttle body, which again has nowhere to go, and the process repeats. While surge normally is not highly damaging to the engine it is certainly annoying and can cause damage with time. To eliminate these problems under surge conditions, a bypass valve (sometimes called an anti-surge valve) is used to release the excess pressure. The bypass valve is actuated using intake manifold vacuum, which opens the vent valve and releases pressure in the air-intake. Air is either released into the atmosphere (blowoff valve) or recirculated back through the supercharger compressor (bypass valve)."
Bored yet?

Basically, surge happens when you're trying to force airflow into something that can't accept it (like high boost on partial throttle on a 2.0L motor). There are no real ways to prevent this other than decreasing the amount of boost requested in that partial throttle situation or increasing displacement in order to find a place for this airflow to go.

I like option #2.

OK, 17 degrees is better, still getting up there for pump gas.

The 20G, if you already have a 10.5 is $800.

Dave:
do you know when 20G turbos will ship for those who already ordered? Have you done a 20G on 93 and your alky kit? if what do you think it will do?(et wise) Can I spray a 50shot of NOS with this turbo vs the alky kit or do both?

The 20G's are on the way here now. As soon as they show up I will ship them. I have not tried a 20G with alky/pump gas yet. Yes, you can spray a 50 shot with the turbo or run alky/pump and the 50.

that could also be your problem. How many inches is the car vacuuming at??? The tial bov is designed different from other blow off valves. If your vacuuming at neg 10-14 inches of mercury then you should be running the softest spring which is ratet at 7 psi. the 3 springs they have are 7, 9 and 11. the 11 is for someone on stock cams with alot of vacuum. the 9 woud be good for a 264/264-264/272 guy, the 7 is good for a 272/272-280-280 guy

I get that sort of part throttle high boost misbehavior on my car but I attribute it to the BOV, not the turbo. I'm thinking of fixing my warped BOV flange (right now I have a Forge 1G sealed down with RTV) and then switching back and forth between the 1G DSM valve (daily driving/autocross) and the Forge (max straight line power) as needed. I did an autocross a couple of weeks ago and the surging was really a problem in the first couple of 1st gear corners. I had a very hard time driving part throttle at 3000-6000 rpm without the bucking and fluttering nonsense. It tended to make me want to floor it or lift completely to smooth things out, neither of which was good for times.

dave can u show us a comparison between the different turbos out there. i mean between the 20G, WR, TME, and 05' turbo with just cams, tbe, intake, boost controller, injectors, fuel pump, and tune wit a flash or safc2. and NO alky.

cuz what i seen is tuning done wit an aem ems or alky. i just would like to see some pump and race oct number comparisons done by u. to truly see the difference between all these turbos and see what numbers are under the curve and hold to redline.

so if u can show us something that would be greatly appreciated.

i hope u read this cuz this is the 3rd or 4th time i ask and havent seen a response yet.
