Just to get an idea on the surge of the normal Evo8-20g. Compared to a stock 03 turbo, is it more? less? My stock 03 can surge pretty bad.

I was unaware that the 03's had a surge issue. My stock turbo on my 03 has never surged since the day I bought it.

Actually I think I probably have the worste surge of anyone on my personal car. We have shipped quite a few of these 20g-8's and the complaints haven't been bad. My car is very built which I am sure helps with spooling the turbo. I also run the heaviest spring I can get in my BOV. I don't think most guys BOV's are nearly as tight as mine and this adds to the surge.

To answer you directly, the 20G-8 (8 is for EVO8 turbo, 20G-9 designates EVO9 turbo) surges quite a bit more than the stock turbo.

Just food for thought

Well, I've decided that the 20G-9 is what I want for my '05 Evo 8 (if that's the right designation? ).

Just need to save up a bit!

Hey Dave,

Are you still going to sell the old style 20gEvo8 TME ? Or are you going to take it off the shelf when you fix the surging problems.

If so, can you give us an estimate to how much more it would be for the upgraded 20gEvo8 TME.

Thanks man !

Yes time is the key..... I have my eye on the 20G-9 set-up...

meanwhile I have these mods going into my car in December 05:

HKS 280's---> on hand
Camgears---> on hand
ARP headstuds---> on hand
Walboro 255 FP---> on hand
AEM EMS with MAF delete---> on order
SMC V2 Meth kit---> on order
and some custom wideband tuning

hopefully by the time I'm done I can do the turbo once all the results are out.

It will surge as it is roughly the same size as the old 20G. The Evo 9 turbo has a bigger compressor housing than the WR.

Answers to questions:

The 20G-8 (EVO8 20g) will still be sold. It works too good and costs a lot less for a guy that already has an EVO8 turbo to not sell it. Yes, it surges, but I had it on my car and loved it. If you already own an EVO8 turbo and want to upgrade it, it is $800 for the upgrade, using your existing tubine housing and such. $300 for a 10.5 new hotside.

The 20G-9 (EVO9 20g) is also $800 for the upgrade if you happen to be lucky enough to already have an EVO9 turbo.

I am running our ported and coated exhaust manifold, 10.5 turbine housing and 02 housing.

Pete,

I should have used your car as an example in all this. I forgot how much power your car made. Your car is very close to mine in the build-up except it uses a stock turbo and alky. This is an excellent indicator on how fast the turbo actually spools. If you notice on your dyno sheet you hit max torque at 4250, same RPM the 20g-9 on my car does but the 20G (and other parts I have you don't) make an additional 34 ft lbs. Same with the HP, comparing spool up the 20g-9 actually peaks 250 rpm sooner. More interesting than that though is how broad the HP curve is on the 20g-9. Your stock turbo doesn't hit 300 whp until 5200 rpm and then stays there until 7,000 rpm, nice. Look at the 20G graph though, it hits 300 whp at about 4500 rpm. Very interesting comparing these two.

I was trying to think of a good Stage 4 example when I was coming up with a comparison chart. I should have used yours.

Thanks for the questions guys,

David Buschur
