To figure our how fast my car would be if it were a GSR add the appropriate amount of weight, that's all we can do

The 20G could be fitted with an external gate but the last time I tried it on a normal TME turbo it didn't do any good.

I have tuned a few UTEC EVO's and they worked out just fine. I don't see a problem with it controlling larger than the 680's BUT do not change the 680's yet as they are probably going to be large enough for most guys. Wait and see.

Kingpin,

I am trying to remember on the 680's. I believe we went OVER 100% on race but were border line and over 90% on pump.

David, Is the hot side any larger on the 9? The only info I can find refers to the turbo being larger and the compressor being larger, but nothing on the hot side.

Surge.

The boost control is hooked up with the inlet off the compressor housing and the other side going to the actuator.

The 27 degrees of timing up top on pump gas is SCAREY!! That is a LOT of timing.

The actuator on my car is the high boost actuator and I am running the stiffest spring in the Tial BOV that I could get.

I am sure there are ways to "tune" the surge out. My only concern is that I make sure I let you guys know there is a slight chance it will happen. Personally the car has NEVER done it with me driving it. Like I say, it is a driving style that seemed to cause it.

Have you tried a different bov like maybe the GReddy to get rid of the surge? My stock turbo car surged like crazy with the Forge until I installed the GReddy RS with the 1 spring mod and a fairly light spring setting. It has no problem holding the boost my stock turbo can give it. Al tuned it in 20 degree weather and it held 28 tapering to 26 PSI. When I had the car on the dyno at AMS it started at 26 dropping to 22 with 68 degrees in the shop.

I have tried different BOV's.

The EVO9 turbo is the same 10.5 hotside as the 2005's were.

Wouldn't the stiffer spring cause more surge?

The turbo is great light to light, the EVO8 20g (20G-8)turbo is prone to compressor surge so I don't think it is a good choice for autocross. The EVO9 turbo being made into a 20g (20g-9) would work out really well.

Yes a stiffer spring will cause more surge.

The ported shroud is on Jarrod's car now. Pulled the car on the dyno this morning quickly with the flash that is in the car. It's too lean so we are going to put the Power FC on it and tune it. I could hear a slight amount of surge this morning. I'll have to drive it after tuning it and see what happens.

The ported shroud does not eliminate the surge. Car is about 3/4's tuned and the results weren't much better than the non-ported shroud.

At this point it seems like you will either live with the surge of the EVO8 or step up with longer waiting times and a little more money to buy the 20g-9.

Sorry guys, it was worth a try.
