Unhappy Whining Noise

Help! There is a very loud whining noise coming from the lower front left portion of my car, (04 EVO). It is a whining sound that started as I rolled towards 5000 miles about a week ago, and it has been getting louder and louder ever since. The noise sounds like it is related to how fast the tranny is spinning; tested this theory this morning on the way to work. Did a pull from 40 to 130 and the noise got higher pitched as I drove but if I take the car out of gear and coast, the noise persists. Engine still sounds fine, but the car feels a little slower overall lately, like it isn't pulling hard enough. Sounds like it could be coming form the diff or somwhere near. Any Ideas? Will post a sound clip of it later tonight (am at work right now).

**Update

Could it be the T-case? Thats a personal worst fear.

Yes, definitely sounds like your transfer case is going, ring and pinion gears to be more precise, I have the same problem and the major thing is that you can't get those gears as separate spare parts but you need a complete new TC which is far from inexpensive

bummer

I've been hearing the noise for about 5 days now, getting worse and worse all the time. Car has been doing the 35 min commute to and fro work this week. Think I can make it home today on I-95 (CT)?

I had that same thing in my 95 VR4. For me what it was is that I somehow cracked my transmission case. When it cracked it had leaked out almost all of the transmission fluid. So lack of fluid was killing my trans. Hopefully you don't notice any trans fluid anywhere around your house.

Saw some water underneath the car the other day, but tasted, felt and smelled it, don't think it was tranny fluid. BUt who knows, what does tranny fluid taste like anyway.

Yea, I saw what looked likje water dripping out from underneath the car the other day, assumed it was just AC condensation based on taste + smell. Not that much leaked, (maybe 3 tablespoons) and it was coming from where the lower arm bars are

If it looks like water, it could be diff fluid. I forgot what it is called but it is clear and has little odor and taste. This could be a leaky front axle seal. A five dollar part from dealership. If this is low then heat and stress can make the axle, diff, whine and wear from heat.

Service

I had the mitsu service full diff service done on the t-case, tranny, and rear diffs earlier in the summer (**** Yonkers Mitsubishi). Find it kinda odd that a leak might spring now, but I did see a little tranny fluid drip down (as in drops) day after I got the car back from them, but never again till this week.

It could also be a CV joint. Get to a dealer and have them check it out. Could be residual from one of the accidents rearing its ugly head now.
