Long Term Redline 75W90 vs. Pennszoil Synchromesh -- mostly Review

Hi All,

I thought I'd take a quick minute to give an update on the 5sp. EVO tranny performance with Red Line 75W90, and Pennszoil Synchromesh.

The test auto is a '03 EVO VIII GSR, and currently has 13.9k miles on the odo. When I bought the EVO, at 500miles I changed out the tranny fluid for some more Mitsu. OEM fluid.

At 2000 miles, both the tranny fluid and diff. fluids came out and MT90 went into the tranny, with 75W90 in the diffs. The tranny shifted better than the stock fluid, but the diffs. really seemed to be a lot more rough and wordy on the road.

So at 5000 miles, I put in some Mobil 1 75W90 into the diffs. and noticed an immediate improvement in the cush of the AWD system on the EVO. I believe I will continue to use Mobil 1 in the EVO diffs.

The EVO went through two winter seasons, and I noticed that when the temperature got below about 40degF, the Redline would be extremely non-synchro happy. The 1 to 2 shift had to be done with utmost care, or I'd end up having to double clutch it into 2nd. Conversely, when the RL really heated up, it performed flawlessly ... even in the dead of winter. Waiting that magical minimum of 20min to heat the RL really became a chore, and it seemed as the 1.5 years went on, the heat up time grew to about 30min.

So, this week at 13.9k miles, out came the RL, and in went the Pennzoil. The RL that came out didn't seem to have any major tranny chunks in it, but I believe things could have been cleaner. First impressions of the Pennz = liquid gold. Right out of the bottle, I cannot feel the mechanical grind on the synchros, as I did with the RL.

Hope that longer term info. helps some fellow EVOers out there.

Cheers,

jcnel.

I just switched to the Syncromesh. It is so sweet. Like having a new gearbox.

I take it by diffs (" I put in some Mobil 1 75W90 into the diffs") you are talking about the transfer case and the rear diff?

Thanks for the info, I too am not very happy with the redline in the tranny or transfer case and am about to swtich out to syncromesh... Think I will do the 75w90 for the xfer case and the rear diff as well.

yes ... as the front diff. resides in the TC I've been habitually saying diffs. and trying to imply the rear diff., and the TC.

The Synchromesh is the gear oil replacing the Diaqueen from factory right?

.

Interesting writeup.

Yes that does help some of us evo owners out there.

I have to wonder what the long term effects of the Pennz = liquid gold will be.

I agree w/ Synchromesh in the transmission and Mobil 1 in the X-fer case/Rear Diff. I noticed much smoother shifting and the shifter slots in much easier. Definately recommend this to anyone w/ notchy shifts. Also be sure to buy a fluid pump as it will make the job much easier.
