clutch pedal button

I was adjusting the freeplay on my clutch (which is alot harder for me with my monkey arms than posts on this forum led me to believe) and found it really hard to do without bending some sort of button out of the way. It gets pressed when you depress the clutch completely... I noticed that when this is disconnected, the car can start without depressing the clutch. Is this the only purpose of this switch? Can I leave this disconnected without any adverse effects?

That is the starter button for when you start your car. You have to press that down with the clutch to start. Yes you can disconnect it, however, watch out - if you car is in gear when you are starting that wont be good. The reason we have to push in a clutch to start a manual is so that you are not engaged in a gear.

hmmm.... can i mount this remotely and use it instead as a sort of kill-switch except only to be able to start the car? I'm not sure how you hotwire a car, but would the clutch have to be depressed when you start it by hotwiring it?

haha...well hotwiring a car is only sightly more fun...(disclaimer - I am not telling anyone how to hotwire a car)

Yes you should be able to run a remote button in curcuit by splicing into that line and running to wherever...

When you are hotwiring a car, in our cases a manual having the clutch out and car out of gear is the easiest...I havent had to hitwire an Evo (an no I am not a criminal), but it should be similar to any other car. On newer cars the steering column locks, even if hotwired the wheel still wont turn.

Just as an FYI, I just bought my EVO and that is the first thing that I did...unplug that clutch switch.

It isn't necessary and this was an old DSM trick to keep pressure off of the crank before oil pressure has a chance to build. It was used as a 'safeguard' to prevent crankwalk, especially when using heavier perssure plates.

I'd say definitely leave it unplugged.

cool, thanks for all the good info.

jsyevo: look where your clutch pedal goes through the firewall, there will be an electronic button that gets depressed by the clutch pedal when the clutch pedal is pushed in completely. it's on the right side of where the clutch pedal goes through the firewall, and there is a two-wire harness that is clipped into the back of it.

i think it is called a NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH to prevent you from starting the car with it in gear. safety factor when you have young ones playing around in the car and happen to turn the key to start the engine....
