5w30 mobil 1 in the daily beater...(Hey, it leaks oil and money don't grow on trees! )

In holland there has been a major test for Subaru's regarding viscosity and guess what: 5W-50 and 10W-40 came out best, followed by 5W-40. Interesting detail: 10W-40 were mostly semi-synthetics... In 2004 this was repeated and now the results were: 5W-50, 5W-40 and 10W-40 were best. 10W-60, 0>10W-30 and 0W-40 were less good (but still above norm). Test was made in conjuction between the Subaru club and American based Kendall...

PAO = Poly-Alpha-Olefin, which is basically the 'synthetic' oil base itself. For chemistry:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyolefin
"Many poly-alpha-olefins have flexible alkyl branching groups on every other carbon of their polymer backbone chain. These alkyl groups, which can shape themselves in numerous conformations, make it very difficult for the polymer molecules to line themselves up side-by-side in an orderly way. Therefore, many poly-alpha-olefins do not crystallize or solidify easily and are able to remain oily, viscous liquids even at lower temperatures. Low molecular weight poly-alpha-olefins are useful as synthetic lubricants such as synthetic motor oils for vehicles used in a wide temperature range."

i see that many evo owners use mobil 1 10w-30 and its ok if you are stock, but in my personal opinion if you race your car and your not stock you should get better protection i use mobil1 5w-50 its thicker and i have found that using this oil my temp oil is much cooler now!
