After thinking about it, I'd describe burning clutch as smelling like burning rubber or plastic that stays in the air for a while. Still though, you description sounds like the clutch to me.

You live in S. California so no doubt you have been behind a truck or RV trailer overheating the brakes while coming down out of the mountains. That is what a burnt clutch smells like.
