My VIII was also notchy, but right at 9K, it went away signifently.

Damn your dumb. Changing the fluids in the T/C (tranfer case) will do NOTHING to help get rid of the notchyness.
If you want to get rid of the notchyness, use some GM/Penzoil/BG synchromesh in the TRANNY, not the T/C.
