Conditions: Highway race 60MPH 3rd gear pull, brake boosting 20Psi. After 3rd honk I sprayed my nitrous at 4000RPM I got to 4500RPM and Blew my cylinder one and four piston rings, and stretched head bolts and blown head gasket.
Race/Track History: Gone to the track 6 times with a stock time at 5280 FT above sea level of 13.7sec and with a intake, boost controler and 50 Shot I did a 12.2 with no bottle heater. The majority of my racing was untimed against other cars

Mods: Cone filter, 3" turbo back, catless, walbro, Piggyback ECU, OEM boost controller @ 23 psi, Piper Rally Cams
Miles: ~37k
Conditions: Rod bearing failure (#3?) without warning during 70 mph freeway cruise.

Race/Track History: Lots - 20+ track days with 2 to 4 hours of track time per day - road course, not drag. Another 15 to 20 hours of dyno runs for tuning & parts comparisons.
Other Factors / Notes: No detonation signs on the pistons. Shifted at @ 7000 at the track. Did hit the rev limiter (set at 7500) a few times. Oil was changed after every trackday. Root cause of failure seemed to be from track stress but the engine failed under light load & with no warning. Luckily the failure was gentle & damage was limited to the rod & crank bearings & journals. Oil pump looked good when disassembled. Initial failure looked to be a rod bolt & bearing on #3 cylinder (IIRC), leading to the belief that the root cause was probably a stretched rod bolt.

it was a light ticking that comes from the back of the engine bay. I don't know if it was too faint to hear at other times but it was audible at about 2300-3000k and would "go away". I thought it was a bad lifter waiting for more oil to pump it up. I was wrong. I could not duplicate the sound without load on the car.
Car has no symptoms or driveability problems. No change in vac @ idle. No more lope. Just a tick. But its not a lifter... (this is another quote and is also what i experienced)

Car spun the #1 Rod bearing. I'm not the original owner. It spun on or about 500 miles after my frist oil change. Mobil 1 synthetic. At first it sounded like classic lifter tick. Then after the frist drive on the interstate it sounded like classic rod knock.
Also when i inspected the bearings one is about 2mm thinner than the other in width. Like across the bearing the long flat way not the long curved way or the thickness way. I think that's what's in the oil pan. One of the bearings must have been walking to the side and gettign little slivers taken out.
P.S. The dealer did not honor the warranty because of a gap in service records. (The previous owner)

Spraying N2O after 5500 rpm with stock turbo is even more dangerous than 4000 rpm. Think of the pressure on the turbine - about 55psi near redline at high boost. Which way do you think the exhaust flows at overlap? Through the other scroll and back in the charge. Now add some nitrous to ensure hotspots can combust on a compression stroke.

miles: 35k
driving history: original owner, bought with 30 miles on car, proper break in, 3-5 hours road course racing, 20+ hours dirt rally racing, 100+ launches/drag races, driven 1000+ miles a week, severely wrecked 3 times, driven hard on a daily basis, highway raced once to three days weekly, changed oil every 1500-3000 miles(3k at most!) and every track day. (in a nutshell, crap beat out of it, but well maintained)
conditions: runs very rough, found metal shavings in oil pan, most likely spun bearing will know for sure saturday.
next step: bank loan and a buschur rebuild!

here it is: Spun 3 main bearings, possible (most likely) warped crankshaft.
due to either oil pump failure, or simply over-revving from rally driving.
if i had to pick a way to go out, it wouldnt be carefully daily driving my car all the time and suddenly the motor pops. i drove the sh*t outta this thing so at least i got my use of it.

Conditions: Was having some fun, couldnt really see as sun was blinding my eyes at the track.
Pics: Coming when motor is taken apart.
Race/Track History: Mostly beat on the street, saw numerous high 600's on race gas.
Contributing Factors: Probably me reving out the 2.3L to 8500. Lol.
