J&S safeguard

have u guys used a J&S safeguard? I was wondering how good they are at sensing detonation and pulling timing; they use the stock knock sensor, right? would it be a good idea to add or upgrade to a better knock sensor?

Don't even know what you're talking about. Why don't you link us to it?

i was thinkinga getting the monitor and having it hooked up to a wideband sensor as well

Well, you know that the stock ECU already has this built-in. Were you talking about using it with a standalone ECU or something else?

I have the J&S installed in my Evo with an Autronic standalone. I've been very happy with it so far.

The J&S safeguard was "meat and potatos" for the serious Honda guys... I've not seen anyone use it with the Evo yet... they were great insurance for the former...

That's like a rock and a MP5 though... both dated, and can kill you, but one works sooooooooo much better. That said, I'm not enough of a real "tuner" to say how much of an asset it would be in our application though.

So, you would recommend using it on an Evo with the stock ECU?

I had one on my FD... with a car like that, it should have been a factory piece.

The J&S - I believe - has a much more precise knock sensor (if not include then available) and will pull timing if it senses detonation.

Never popped my FD motor due to detonation - so it seemed to work well for me... additionally, it doubled as a Wideband O2 - and at the time, there were very few WB O2s with a 52mm gauge available... shoot the AEM EMS wasn't even on the market at this time... wow - that was a long time ago...

Aaaaaanyhow, a tad expensive - a healty tune might be more valuable on a 4G63... but just my .02.

fwiw, the stock knock sensor is tuned to the motor and should do better than anything not also tuned to the motor.

I wonder what happens to those people who put cams in and keep the stock ecu. Since the noise has changed it would seem they will be getting or could be getting false knock detection.

Doesn't the AEM use the stock knock circuit? With Hydra you have a map that you can "tune" the stock knock sensor sensitivity with.

My buddy has it on his 2000 Si with a Greddy kit on it. He's been running like 14-15 psi on stock internals for about 4 years now..... His car still runs like a champ.

Yes it uses the stock sensor, but just like the Hydra you set a table for what knock voltage is just noise at a given RPM. Then you tell it how much timing to pull and/or how much fuel to add for each volt of knock over your set threshold, and it also lets you adjust the rate at which timing is readvanced/fuel is pulled back out.

I would not bother with the J&S unless you are going with a standalone system that does not offer knock sensor support.

No doubt and anybody that has tuned a Honda, especially in boosted applications, knows the stock knock sensor is very sensitive and worthless.

I currently have been using HKS's Knock/Amp which also doubles as a wideband. Nothing like listening to the motor thru headphones.

I had the J&S safeguard on my B18b Drag III turbo integra. No sure if the Evo needs this though since we have a very good knock sensor system.
