Oil Change

So i've read a bunch of threads on break in and when to change oil and i decided to change mine at 500. It ened up being about 550 but whatever. I thought i'd show a few pics of the metal shavings that came out for all the people who say that these are all trapped by the filter. This was about the first 5 seconds of oil that came out, i directed the rest into the hole of the pan. enjoy.

Umm, I thought you shouldn't change the oil until 5000 miles to allow for a proper break in? The excessive metal shavings are the rings and bearings settling in (normal). The oil that comes in the car is a special oil that helps allow a better break in. I don't think it was a wise decision to change it at 500 miles, but its your call.

the oil put in the car is regular Mobil one synthetic. I don't think it would be possible to harm anything by changing the oil too soon.

I didn't make this thread to discuss my break in period, rather to show what the oil looks like after 500 miles and let people make their own decisions on whether to change it or not before they run it hard.

If you search, there are so many different opinions on when to change your oil. I don't think there is no harm in changing the oil early. Some say first 500, 1000, 3000 or just wait until the manual tell you, 5000.

I changed mine at 3000. My engine has 8000 now and it sounds, performs perfect.

exactly, so i don't see how it was not a wise decision to change it early. once again, just wanted to show the pics, not start controversy

You should probably calm down on driving it hard until at least the first oil change. This will allow for proper break-in. Just the theory that i have always gone by.

Yea, I'll take that advise... thanks! I redlined my car at 8k twice before.. hopefully that didn't hurt my car (engine)

What's your reasoning behind this? What's the difference between just driving like normal and running it up to the redline now and then with some shavings in the oil? Especially when the shavings are just sitting at the bottom of the pan not even going through the oil filter. I'm not necessarily saying you're wrong, I'm just encouraging you to think critically about your theory.

When I get my Evo I'm not going to give it any special treatment during the first x miles. I'll change the oil at 5000 and run it up to redline occasionally. However, changing the oil at 500 certainly isn't going to hurt anything other than your bank account.

I'm not being defensive at all but, t is a widely known fact that it is better for your car to let it break in for the first x miles. Gives the rings time to seat correctly. This will help preserve compression in the long run. But if I am wrong about this, please enlighten me.

Im starting to think that theory is BS. I have a friend who has had an Evo, STI, and an S2000. He never has had to replace anything major on his cars. He keeps them till about 35000 miles and on top of it all His cars for some reason have always trapped better at the track I cant say that beating on it from the begining is good but ya. Bone stock STI trapping at 104 at 6000+ feet you explain....
