Lightbulb I need some info about oil filter

I decided to do an early oil change in my EVO.... I've got about 1300 miles and I thought it would not hurt to change the break-in oil at this time.
My question is about the oil filter. Is there a crush washer between the filter and engine block in the EVO or other Mitsu cars? I had those in my Miata and also in the Integra, but the parts guy at the Mistsu dealer did not know.... The filter looks like it's recessed from the O-ring seal that presumably seats on the block. In this case there would be no crush washer, but I'm not sure.... Can somebody help me with this? I rather have all the parts before I start the oil change.
Also, this is my first Mitsubishi car, is there something else I should know before I do this?

Thanks,

Manuel

BTW, the EVO still rocks! and there are no more at Carmax!! I asked and they said they don't know when they'll get another... Well, I got mine

Yes there is a crushable washer. Make sure the dealer gives you one. You will need the filter, washer and oil of course. Make sure you have an oil filter removal tool. I thought that since it was new it wouldn't be too difficult to remove by hand. I was wrong. I changed my oil at 700 miles and have been enjoying my car since.

When I went to the dealership last week to get my regular Lancer checked up they told me that if you miss even one oil change that the warranty would be voided. The techs told me that. At Brad Benson Mitsubishi.

Thanks man, I thought that it might need one... I wonder why the parts guy at dealer who sold me the filter did not offer the washer? I also wonder why the parts guy at Carmax did not know and cpould not find out....

Yeah, I too got all kinds of warnings (almost threats) from every Mitsu service, parts or sales person. They all tell such such things as if you go over the oil change interval even 500 miles, the warranty is void.. or "it has to come back here for the first service (at $120 for the oil change) or you void your warranty", and all kinds of other extreme warnings of voided warranty and broken parts... I don't know if this is some BS the dealers themselves come up with, or maybe Mitsu told them to be careful with these cars, etc.
Personally, I think it's a big bag of BS from the dealers because they don't even agree on all the stories they tell me. Besides, if all this is true, the place where it should tell you is in the car's handbook and maintenance schedule... It only says to change oil and rotate tires at 5K miles intervals or 3750 miles if driven under unusually hard conditions. It also says to use only Mobil 1 synthetic oil... But that is all, no other threats or warnings unless I missed something.......

The dealership is full of MORONS who are full of ****... take everything they say and then trace the source... MONEY... they will poke your eyes out if you don't know better... so all this BS about them changing the oil, if you go over 500, etc is BS!

End of story

I just bought a 20 litre drum of Mobil 10w30 for my S, which I am trading in for an Evo VI... I *really* hope that this engine takes 10w-30, otherwise I've wasted $200USD or so...

Just to clarify.....

Are you asking about a crush washer that goes at the base of the filter?

Or are you talking about a crush washer that goes at the base of the oil pan drain plug?

When you buy a filter from the dealership, you get a crushable washer that is used to replace the washer on the end of the drain plug.

There is no crushable washer that goes at the base of the oil filter. When I did my first oil change last week, I looked very closely for this. The rubber seal at the base of the filter takes care of creating the seal.

You are of course right!! I can't believe I got confused about that. Of course, the crush washer is for the oil drain screw!! Anyway, I did buy one last night and today I went to look for someplace to change my oil....

I was nervous about it because I've heard too many horror stories about incompetent or even malicious techs that do damage to cars... It was with some trepidation that I finally pulled into the 4th or 5th place I saw. It was clean and neat, a young lady came out and spoke with me, she reassured me that they knew all about special cars and they would take special care with mine. They drove it in and in a few minutes they were done. The guys were all excited about the car.. They told me how they saw it at the auto show and they loved it, etc. I think they did a good job (it is after all a very simple thing..), they documented the use of Mobil 1 (I supplied the oil, filter and crush washer) on the bill and charged me $15... It was not bad but I think I'd be better off next time taking it to a dealer. One of them told me they charge $60 for the oil change. That's $10 more than I spent, but it might be worth it just for peace of mind....
Anyway, I now have new filter and fresh oil after 1600 miles... It might not be necessary, but it can't hurt.. right?.....

you spent $50 to change your oil?
Well you did pay someone to do it, so I guess its about right.
How many quarts of oil does the car take?

5 qts of oil at $5+ per quart = around $28; the filter and crush washer is around $8 from the dealer... The labor was $15....

That comes to around $50.... to me $15 for the hassle of changing the oil and filter plus disposal of the used oil is pretty reasonable. It also takes them a lot less time to do it than it would take me (they are all set up for it).....

I guess I could save the $15 labor by doing it myself, but first I'd have to buy some ramps and a decent jack... That would probably set me back around $100 (that's about 7 oil changes at $15 each)..... I live in a loft so I don't have a good way to store all that stuff, plus the rules of the condos don't allow for working on cars in the parking lot.... So, I would have to put all the crap in the car, go to wherever I could change the oil, do the job, re-bottle the spent oil, take it back to the auto parts store, go back home take all the tools back into my apartment and so on....

If I had a different setup, I would do a lot of my own maintenace, but with my situation, I think $15 is way cheap and utterly convenient... I would even go $10 more and pay the dealer to do it for $60.... That way there is no question of the maintenance for warranty purposes... Anyway, anybody who can afford to buy a new EVO VIII surely can afford to spend $.10 per mile for oil changes

SE8,

I just changed my oil on Tuesday at 1,486 miles. I used the green cap Mobil 1 10W-30 which I picked up at Costco for $3.99 per quart. From my favorite Mitsubishi dealer I picked up the MD356000 oil filter and the MD050317 engine oil pan drain gasket. The filter lists for $7.95 and the gasket lists for $1.25. My good friend at my favorite dealer sold them to me for $5 and .90c.

My owners manual says that the crankcase holds 4.8 quarts. The oil filter and oil cooler hold .32 quarts each. After draining the oil for about 10 minutes the filter was removed and the new one installed. The drain plug was replaced and 5 quarts of oil filled the crankcase. After running the engine for a few minutes and checking for leaks (there were none). I checked the oil level which was at the top hatch. Just perfect. My very cooperative mechanic charged me $10 for watching.

Have fun!

If you guys can't find a MObil1 filter the K&N gold is identical. It's even made at the same factory. Thought I'd let ya know since they're both hard to find, at least where I live.
