Buschur intake kit vs K&N TYPHOON intake(LOL)
#16
I don't have alot to comment on this thread since most of the valid points are already made, I did want to add that the issue IS due to disruption, the metered portion of the sensor is very small, but the reading represents the flow through the entire sensor, anything that can cause disruption of the flow or unpredictable results would cause this particular sensor to respond poorly..
I do doubt that the "Baffle" does anything more than cause a bit of a restriction though, but for it to be effective in preventing some of the stalling that occurs with a recirculated valve, the baffle would bave to be in front of the pipe and even closer to the MAF sensor, in that case the airflow could "Stack up" or pool in that area causing the MAF to read unpredictably.
I suspect a majority of the problem with the K&N unit would be in the diameter of the pipe and angle of the bends, additionally the distortion in airflow from the filter and adapter.

To BIGBADGSX, you said that the previous owner had installed this intake. Do you know if the car was even tuned for it? How does the car drive now that you have the Buschur one on?
I have the Typhoon, it was my first mod (before i knew about EvoM), I kinda regret buying it from what everyone said, but I have never experienced the problems that everyone says plauges this intake. When Al custom tuned my car, he even told me that he found a nice way to tune this intake and make gains from it. It took him awhile to figure out this intake and get it right, but now, tuning this intake isn't really a problem like it was a year or two ago.

I never noticed that before.
I never noticed that before.
looks like a crude attempt to effect the bov turbulence entering the maf pipe
What ever the rational sadly the K & N typhoon is a total nightmare of an intake
I was very suprized that K & N would make something like that

This really is one of the worst intakes I've seen. It needs more internal volume to get rid of the constant fuel cut (I was seeing it at 15 PSI ) and a repositioned dump tube without that shroud. I had one on my Evo when I bought it, and it only lasted a week before I got rid of it. I took a page from the cheapass DSM owner book and replaced it with a straight 3" SS pipe I welded a dump tube into and cheap cone filter sitting cockeyed against the meth resevoir and it runs considerably better. I even powder coated it to make it pretty. Then I sold the intake to someone else and used the money to take my wife to dinner. The only thing the K&N has going for it is the strong sound it produces.
