Whenever my car feels like its going to grind when I shift it into reverse, I just shift into 1st gear, bump it forward just a tiny bit, and then it usually shifts into reverse fine after that.

rolling a little bit MAY cause it, otherwise have your clutch inspected, or maybe even the gears themsleves. i may be wrong though. is it on;y in reverse?

I seem to recall a learned member saying that there are no syncros on reverse.

That certainly should help explain why this happens. BTW - it happens to me on my 04. I do the same as someone suggested above - just move it forward a bit in 1st, then reverse is smooth.

i've had this for about 20 thousand miles, i just stick it in second and then reverse, i never grind doing it like that, and i believe that reverse shares the same syncro as 5th, not as someone suggested that it doesn't have a syncro.

Every car I have ever had with a manual transmission has done this. It's my understanding that no manaul transmission cars have syncros for revers. And check this out, I have the easiest "solution" to this problem.

When you feel it's going to grind when putting it in reverse, or it feels like it just won't go, all you have to do is let out the clutch a little bit and it'll pop right in. Make sure after you do this that you put the clutch back in, and then go. Doing this helps spin the gears a little bit so they can match up.

I am intentionally bumping this incredibly old thread because my car started doing this today. When I put it in reverse a couple of times this morning it would grind. I tried pushing the clutch in and out a couple of times but it would still grind. There were also several times when it didn't grind, but it worries me that it started grinding at all.

This thread seems to say that I should just shift it into first and then into reverse. Does this work for anyone else?

as said: put it in first gear, move fwd a few inches and try R again. R is not synchronized so you are actually moving the gears into mesh; all manual transmissions are like this and this is normal.

I have the same problem, put it into another gear first and it should go into reverse smooth.
