A little too much oil.

Hey guys sorry about the newb question, but I changed my oil this weekend and overfilled a little bit. I searched and some have said it's ok don't do it again, while others said to drain some of it. Will it really give me a problem in future if I leave it?
Thanks.

I always put in a full 5 quarts and it runs over a little bit. No worries... it'll prolly burn off anyways

i always put the whole 5 qrts. in. did it in my 03 and do it on my IX. you have nothing to worry about. A little more is better than a little less!

Huh.. 5 quarts is probably too much unless your draining the oil cooler as well. My 03 and my 06 only take (and took) ~4.3 - 4.4 quarts each oil change (including new oem filter). Thats with doing it on flat ground, after a hard drive and even left draining for 20 minutes or so. I always fill mine exactly up to the fill line and check again after the car is driven.

I don't know where all you guys are coming up with this extra half quart of oil.

try not to put too much oil in it is not good for the car. you will over work the oil pump and it may go out. 4qts (or just the dip stick )

most people, however, would assume that when you drain the oil pan, the cooler would drain also. im not so sure either that it doesn't. i had a s2000 with 407 whp and everytime i changed the oil through the usual method, the cooler which i added for the increase in power (oil temps were dangerously high without it.) would also drain through that way too. now know where your coming from with your thoughts because as a result of that oil cooler i had to add a couple more quarts.

AllData Pro shows that the Evos take 4.8 qt WITHOUT changing the filter. When also changing the filter AllData says to add another .32 qt. I'm pretty sure most people change their filter every time like I do.

I always just use 5 and it's a little over until I start the car and it fills the oil filter....

P.S. It says to add another .32 qt if the oil cooler is removed.

My evo only takes 4.5 qts. I drive it hard then let it sit for 20 minutes on flat ground. Then i drain the plug, then remove old filter. I'll let it sit there draining till no more drops come out. Meanwhile im pouring in a little bit of oil into the new oil filter. I put it all back together then fill her up. Go out for a test drive and park back on the same flat surface. Then i'll come back and check the oil after its cool again to refill almost to full. But it never has gone past 4.5qts.

^ ditto. I check my oil like a crack addict too, just to get a good feel for where its at under what condition ie- cold, warm, after a long or short drive, etc. I've never used more than 4.5 quarts.

I always use about 4-4.5 quarts. What I usually do is fill my oil filter a few times before putting it on. I always fill up the motor with 4 and it is always right on the line for full. I check it depending on my driving. If I beat her, I check it that day after it's cooled and the next morning. If I drive normal, every 1-2 weeks.

Yea I find after a real hot run it can be right at the FULL mark then a few hours later when its cold it's just a C-hair under the mark or so. Thats basically where I leave mine.

If you go by the book, you should be using approximately 4.8 gts of oil with filter change. A little over/under from time to time probably won't hurt it. IMO, 4 qts is way too low. However, to each their own.
