It should never grind, man, unless you screw up the shift, which I doubt you are doing. Now notchiness, thats a different story, but it shouldnt grind.
You can go ahead and change the gear oil but thats prolly masking the problem. You shouldnt have to change trans and diff oil more than once every 20-30k miles under normal to spirited driving conditions.

Your 2nd gear synchro might be going bad. Tell us the conditions it happens in, because a little grind going into 2nd is normal when the weather is cold and the tranny fluid hasn't heated up. Its a very gut wrenching sound

the car is a 03 with 15k miles. i had the 5th gear syncro replaced underwarranty. the shifts are horrible when its cold, but even when its warmed up it grinds. when i beat on the car it shifts fine but when i baby it, it grinds ( go figure )...
the car has no engine mods since day 1. i was waiting for the warranty to expire before i do anything (bad past experience with my wrx) what i do have is kartboy base bushings but i dont see that doing anything other then changing the fell of the shift.
i dont know if dsm guys use this stuff called neo syncro (ill do a search) i heard it do wonders... ....
