Need Advice Tonight! Maf Sensor Issue

I have the hood popped, and the air filter removed, and following a site that was linked on evom, http://spydermagazine.com/2002/March.../maf_clean.htm i removed the sensor wire, and undid the 2 screws for the maf sensor, but i can't get it out. am i supposed to? I got pissed, and removed the whole air box, and it's currently sitting on my garage floor. there is 1 tiny wire inside the airbox, and a large metal piece that goes from top to bottom. am i supposed to clean either one of those? am i just an idiot? HELP!

btw, i know the site's for mr2's but it's all i could find for help on this.
