"Headworks" on my Evo 5

Hi all,

I'm new to this board, so please pardon me if this question has been asked before.

Would I really see significant performance benefits by custon porting and polishing the head on my Evo V?

Bit of background:

My Evo 5 engine is pretty much stock, except for:

- Apex'i AVC-R (peak boost conservatively set at 1.1 bar)
- Apex'i S-AFC
- K&N filter
- Apex'i downpipe and cat-back exhaust

With the above set-up, I'm getting 233HP to the wheels (on this dyno, stock Evo's normally get between 210-212HP).

My tuner says that have my head gas-flowed, together with bigger valves and adjustable cam gears, plus remapping the fuelling using my Apex'i Power FC programmable ECU (which I have purchased but not yet installed) should result in at least 280HP to the wheels, at 1.0 bar with the stock turbine.

Does this sound reasonable? Meaning, will the above "headworks", mated to an otherwise stock block and turbine result in real performance gains? Some people have told me that there are limited gains to be had from gas flowing a 4G63.

This same tuner has achieved 385HP at the wheels with the same head modifications, but using a larger turbo at much higher (1.7 bar) boost and a MoTec ECU.

Many thanks in advance for the advice!

I know friends who ported & polished their rides and they had pretty decent gains....they said that it was worth the $$$ at least.

As far as the 280hp at the wheels (post-mods) comment....I don't know too much about FI cars, but I don't know if those mods would bring THAT significant of an increase in hp, although that's probably upping the boost too, so I guess it's probably within reason, but I don't think gains would be quite that big.

Post mod gains

Claudius, Hooby,

Thanks for the quick replies.

I suppose 50HP does seem like a huge gains. But my tuner (not Manuel himself Claudius, but this chap that works for him, who preps all their crazy motors) seems very confident on the 280HP on 1.0 bar boost.

I still have all-stock internals, so I'm definitely not going past 1.3 bars, just to be safe. If something goes bang, it will hurt my pocketbook in a big way!

The question I have is: Does the map need to be changed after porting the heads etc.? Otherwise I might have that done, cause you don't really need a Evo specialist for that, just an engine specialist, which I have round here. It's a place in Solingen that prep Audis, f.e. 500 bhp+ RS2s...

The head is on!!!

Hi all,

The head is on the car today! Brought her in this morning, and by this evening, it was being bolted on the block.

Bought the head off a friend's Evo-- big valves, titanium retainers, adjustable cam gears and all. The head is also shaved slightly, so my compressions ratio will go up. Crossing my fingers that it will work well. I won't know for sure for a while because the dyno is still being repaired, so I can't do proper tuning until it's up and running.

Absolutely the fuelling will have to be remapped, because it will be flowing a much larger volume of air with the new head. If I leave things as-is, I run the risk of leaning-out. So out goes my stock ECU and in goes the Power FC.

We're shooting to get the 280HP wheel figure when it's done. Though I suppose if I can get to at least 260HP (from current 233HP) on 1.0 bar, I'll be happy. The Evo from which the head came was hitting 385HP at the wheels, though running a larger turbo at about 1.6+ bar.

Will let y'all know what transpires.

Cheers!

gains with the ported head

Hooby,

I finally got my Power FC this week, and tuned my car on the dyno today.

Didn't QUITE hit the target 280HP @ the wheels (from a pre-head reading of 232HP). But came close enough! Final output was 273HP @ the wheels, or a 40HP gain.

Note that boost was NOT increased (still spiking to 1.1 - 1.2 bar, holding about about 0.9 to 1.0 bar).

Next step is to install 272/272 cams. Cheers! =)
