Weirdest Problem Ever Eoncountered...
I held back from making this post all night last night but i've been pushed to outer limit with this car. I hate to do this because I really do know alot about evos but I have to admit that no one knows everything and everyone can learn something. I'm actually having a problem with my car that i just cannot figure out. I'm forced to turn to the evo community for help whether it be vendors or average evo owners. Heres the info
I have a 06 evo 9 with 2700 miles on it. Mods are TBE, MBC, Turbosmart dual port bov, HKS drop in, boost/WB/water temp gauges.
I havent touched the car in over 2 weeks and 1000 miles.
Yesterday morning I brought my gf to the dentist. After I left, I accelerated in 1st gear and around 5500 the car almost felt like it hit fuel cut. So i went to to 2nd and floored it again and watched my boost gauge go from 22 psi and drop to around 9 psi at about 5500 rpm and go down to about 5 psi by redline. ITS LIKE THE ULTIMATE TAPER!!!
So it turn down the radio all the way now and start to listen and when i get in the mid 5's (rpm) I can hear AIR pissing out like a hose is ripped open. But the odest thing is if I go to 4th gear or 5th gear at a very low rpm, like 2500, and just floor it, THE CAR WILL HOLD 22 PSI ALL THE WAY TO 5400-5900 RPM WHERE IT THEN JUST PISSES OUT AIR!! So my first thought was I have a boost leak, no big deal. I pull over, pop the hood, dont see anything on the upper pipe, I figured either its the bov or lower pipe maybe. I get back to the shop, throw my stock bov in first and car has the same problem. Then i pull it inside the bay and I pull the stock intake off and do a boost leak test. heres where it gets interesting. Car holds 40-50 psi in the system without leaking anything. So now i'm a little confused. I figure maybe i fixed it taking all this stuff apart. I put it back together, same problem. i bring it back take it apart again and do another boost leak test. This time it wont hold anything over 3 psi and it sounds like air is making past the throttle body. (what i think happened though was my egr hose popped off after the first test when i took it for a ride, more on that later) SO then I decide to change my MBC to another one just for kicks. Yea same problem. I THEN bring the car to my friends shop and throw it on an awd dyno jet to possibly hear or see where the air is coming from on the dyno. ON THE DYNO THE CAR BOOSTS AND HOLDS FINE!!! CAR MAKES 305WHP WITHOUT LEAKING AT ALL!!! WE TRIED 3RD GEAR, 2ND GEAR AND 1ST GEAR PULLS JUST TO SEE.
My friend then says maybe the EGR hose fell off, and he checks it and it DID, so he puts it back on, but I still have the same problem.
SO now i'm at a loss for words over this problem. I know its going to end up being completely out of the ordinary but I'm just stumped. I'll probably just start replacing all the pipes with hard pipes but I'd like to fix the problem instead of throwing parts at it. Heres a recap for anyone that doesnt want to read this whole thing:
Car drops boost from 22 psi to about 9 and then lineraly with rpm goes down to about 4 psi by redline
Car has huge air pissing out sound coming from the engine bay
I changed the bov
I changed the boost controller twice
I boost leak tested it and it held 40-50 psi of air without leaking
only mods are TBE, MBC, Drop in, BOV.
Car drives fine normally and partially boosted
If you put the car in 5th gear at about 40 mph and floor it, it holds 22 psi no problem all the way to about 5500 and then something opens and air just starts pissing out and the boost drops first to about 8-9 psi, then to about 3-4 psi by redline.
I hate making this thread because I feel like it may make me look bad because people may think "O he's supposed to be a vendor and work on cars, etc... and cant figure out his own problem" Well thats not completely the case. I'm still 22, Still only been in 4g63 world for 5 years since I got my first talon tsi and I still think anyone can learn. Just like Buschur learns when he builds a turbo kit and it makes 100 less wtq. You learn from trial and error and you learn from other people. MAYBE SOMEONE HERE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS ME AND KNOWS THAT ITS SOMETHING REALLY STUPID, IDK. But I appreciate any help offered from anyone in advance. I even slept on this and I just cant conclude whats wrong. I MAY POST A VIDEO OF WHATS HAPPENING BY FILMING MY BOOST GAUGE AND HOPEFULLY AUDIBLY PICKING UP THE AIR PISSING OUT SOUND.
JUST ANYONE THAT POSTS, PLEASE READ EVERYTHING I WROTE AS I'VE DONE PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING TO ATTEMPT TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. I JUST DONT WANT PEOPLE POSTING, DO A BOOST LEAK TEST, CHANGE YOUR BOV, CHANGE YOUR MBC, I DID ALL OF THAT ALREADY.

no i did a true boost test, i took the intake tube off, put a tester on the inlet of the turbo and filled the system up with air up to 40 psi, then bled off and tried it up to 50 psi

I even sprayed soapy water around the TB seals when I did the leak test and had my hand over there and listened in silence. NOTHING
plus the leak I have is pissing out air like the whole upper pipe came off. You can hear it at 100+ mph inside the car with the windows up or down. Its a massive amount of air

DO you test your intercooler? Pressure test
Look all your vacum hose on the intake manifold and the intake manifold gasket.
ALso try to see if something are lose like any metal that could activate the knock sensor to a level that retard the timming of the car.
IF you run less boost like 15 psi the car do the same or is only at 22 psi?

So you didn't hear any air leaking when on the dyno? If I remember right, you said that even at certain times when it DID in fact hold 22psi, you could still hear it pissing air?

I had the same issue... if you are using the stock intake snorkel... make sure both of those tabs are connected to the frame... or that snorkel will suck against the hood and restrict your airflow big time

Have you checked the turbo itself? I know when I put my hotside on I didnt get it set properly in the clamps and you could hear the air escaping. Or the snorkel being restricted sounds probable.

I had the same thing dan just said make sure u have those clips!!! Does it feel like u r not moving fast in 4th and 5th gear but the turbo is spooling hard than that is maybe your problem those 2 clips
