Stock oil pressure?

Hey,

I just got finished wiring up my defi gauges and installed the lower radio relocation kit.

My tripple upper pod didnt come in yet, so i left the gauges out for now.

Heres the scary part. I was driving home from my work and i get to the stop light and the low oil pressure chime came on.

I didnt think much of it at first because i didnt calibrate the warning sensors yet, but when i finally installed my oil pressure gauge to see why it was chiming, i had 15-20pi at idle. Is this normal? I got on it a bit to see if my gauge was getting the right signal, and it went up to about 120ish psi, so i asume its okay.

What are typical readings that you guys see?

Also, what are typical oil temp readings?

I am trying to figure out where i should set my warnings and if i have low pressure at idle.

Oh, and to those who are waiting for the pics, my new pod should be here monday, ill have them then.

Thanks in advance
JoshR

wow, 4.2 psi huh. What a relief! Thanks man, good info.

I was worried that my bone stock IX had an oil pressure problem.

What do you normally see at idle? When driving?

Do you have an oil temp gauge? If so, what are your values?

Thanks for the info, i can rest now,

JoshR

14-17psi at idle (converted) on my GReddy oil pressure gauge...tapped at the side of the head by the intake cam

Yes that is fine. However, the pressure will read highest if you are tapping by the oil filter, and the pressure will read lower if tapped by the cams. I have mine on a sandwich plate and it reads a little below 20 psi when warm at idle.

as for oil temps, again it depends on where the sensor is tapped at. Mine is on that same sandwich plate and after driving for awhile it reads around 180F (i think). At around the 9 o'clock position on the defi oil temp gauge.

I have my oil pressure warning sensor set at like 14 psi.

Funny...my oil pressure is tapped at the filter location on the passenger side hole, and it reads around 10 psi at idle....

Yeah, that's where mine is too. ...with a lighter oil it will read lower than 10 psi after a spirited run.

Here is an idea, you don't want the alarm going off set your warning point a bit lower. You have the best gauges use them for what they were made for.

FWIW I get around 100 when cold and 80 when it's warm. It drops to about 15 to 20 at idle.

A good rule of thumb I have been told is 10 PSI for every 1000 RPM's.

I idle at about 1 BAR when warm.
I have found that my pressure at idle falls to nothing during canyon driving and at the track. This was with the stock Mobil 1 5W30. I have since moved to Redline 10w40 and this problem went away.
