Performance advantages to thermal coating?

So after a couple of searches I couldnt find my answer to this- What are the permance (whp) advantages to having a thermal coating on a ported stock intake mani/exhaust mani/10.5 hotside/ebay 02 housing? I am planning on porting my stock intake and exhaust mani/TB and installing an Ebay 02 housing, but the question is whether or not to have them coated while off the car? Is there a significant performace increase? I know underhood temps will be lower, but I dont have a ram-air intake, just stock box so thats not a huge concern- also any body here have warranty issues with coating of stock parts? Thanks in advance for your input!

the coatings are used to keep the heat INSIDE the exhaust, and particularly hot before the turbo. keeping the heat up before the turbo will keep exhaust gases hot, and pressures in turn will be higher, thus quicker/stronger spool. the underhood temps are also a definate benefit to it. as all components suffer if it is hot in the engine bay, its best to limit that as much as possible.

I say coat everything you can, but if you don't send it to Swain or HPC, you are wasting your money.

Scrape off the JetHot crap and send it to Swain before you install it. Unless you just want it to be pretty, then keep the JetHot.

Are you talking about a thermal barrier coating or a thermal dispersant coating?

You would put two different coatings on the exhaust manifold and intake manifold.

You want to keep heat inside the parts related to exhaust.

You want to keep heat out of the parts related to your intake.

Look into Swaintech, they have a coating called White Lightning for keeping heat in. They also have a coating called BBE for dissipating heat.

For instance you would put White Lightning on your exhaust manifold, hot side of turbo, downpipe, etc.

You would put BBE on say, the intercooler, intercooler piping, intake manifold, ect.

http://www.swaintech.com probly the best IMO when it comes to coatings, read up on them and you will see why they are different.

Where would one aquire these?

Or are these like the best ever, but so expensive and exotic that they would never be used in an automotive application?

We use Swain exclusively.
Here is a example of their white lightning coating and their bbe coating.
enjoy! We have many more piqs on the site.

Since nobody answered his last question, yes the warranty would be toast. You clearly pulled apart and permanently modified items directly connected to and super critical to proper operation of the engine. If you blew your engine and they popped the hood and saw a heat coating on any of your manifolds, its a done deal.

Just got my ported/coated exhaust manifold and o2 housing from PPI. The pieces look great!

Wish I could do the intake manifold also but don't have a core to send them and can't keep the car down for that long.

Great work Wayne!

Oh, and if you do get the exhaust parts coated by Swaintech, their White Lightning coating makes a great base for paint. I know some people dont like the white look.

Thanks Tony, glad you like them

Just so you know, I do have a stock intake manifold, exhuast manifold, and t/body core in stock now. I should have a hotside in within 2 weeks. My goal is in 3 weeks to always have 1 of all the ported/coated parts available for the customers. That way I don't always have to work from their core...but it is tough to stay ahead when they go out so fast.

I don't want to start another thread since good info is in here but the OP's original question was never answered. I would love to know the answer to the question myself.
