Is my Clutch Blown??
Hi,
Have an '05 Evo 8
Been having an issue when shifting into 1st to 3rd. The engine revs up 1000RPM or so before i start moving, then it goes back down. My car has 32k miles on it, nvr launched it or anything, but it is my weekend driver!
Also, i noticed after getting out of the car that sometimes there is a kind of acrid smell (even when i drive it nice). It still seems to pull fine when I drive it hard, i notice this behavior more when I'm drivin slow.
I have read on some of the other threads that ~30k miles is when the clutch gives out? That seems pretty fast to me, but if that is how quick they go out, then I'll definitely want to get an aftermarket clutch of some sort... want it to be drivable tho! Not lookin to get her past 400hp tops at any point.
I know this is a long post but I wanted to describe everything in detail. So is my clutch blown or fixable? Should I look at getting an aftermarket one? If so, which clutch would you recommend?

If you never launch the car and you are only lightly modded, 32k miles is too short for a clutch's lifespan.(Though none of us know how you really drive.) Does the motor rev up 1k rpm everytime you stop and go, or only when you turn the car on after it's been sitting off for a while?
If it's when you stop and go then it sounds like the clutch is slipping, and it will probably get worse as time goes on, ie. reving up between each shift, and it is time to get a new clutch.

Sounds like a slipping clutch... mine started happening in 4th, 5th and 6th gear pulls on the highway. I just replaced mine... at 10K miles!!! IT started slipping just the way you described, but it will get worse until you replace it. By the time I drove to the shop it would rev like 5-6000 rpm and then drop down before moving forward... and then would barely even move forward! I was luck I was able to drive it to the the shop at all! Feel lucky you got that many miles out of yours- the clutch is a weak point on the car- I drive aggressively but only did less than 10 launches total on my stocker before it gave out... and if you are running more power than stock you should probably at least upgrade to a good single disc setup, Exedy or ACT

Yes, it revs up after every stop and go. I dont launch it off the line but I'm definitely not a laggy driver either! (again, weekend car)
So, I've been looking for a clutch on Buschur Racing:

But, these are twin plate racing clutches. Does someone make a good, solid, single plate clutch that will hold up and feel/sound like stock??

Just a heads up, quite a few people (including myself) have experienced gear lock out with the ACT, meaning you could not shift at high rpms. It will pretty much **** you off to no end. Make sure you do a lot of research and read some reviews on whatever you decide to go with.

Well, i got my car at the shop. Started slippin like a mother F*%&er (pics coming). One other question, i dont want to have to keep swapping clutches every 30k or so! Am I stuck getting a twin plate ceramic clutch to get decent clutch life? I know it depends on driving habits too. I have owned a Supra and 3000GT with no clutch problems!
