grinding in reverse

grinding in reverse
Ive been having a problem lately with my car not wanting to go into reverse. It'll either lock out and not want to go in, or it'll grind loudly. I usually have to pull it towards reverse back to neutral and repeat a few times before it'll even get it. Sometimes I pump the clutch and then it'll go it.
Is this my reverse gear?
My clutch?
Something else?
Let me know. I've had a few friends tell me something about the reverse not having a syncro or something and I'd need to go into a forward gear then shift? That just doesn't sound right. I think something's f*cked up.
Can you get a single gear replaced in your tranny? Any idea how much that would be or how much labor?

If it gives you a hard time again just put it in 5th(or 6thMR) and then back into reverse......ALOT of standard cars have this problem from time to time. Not just evo's. If its completely locked out then its a problem.

problem could be a disengagement related issue, you might want to adjust your clutch if the pedal has a good amount of play at the top of the travel.
whens the last time the trans fluid level was checked or the fluid was changed? The past 2 Evo trannys Ive R&R'd and rebuilt were caused by either low fluid or nasty fluid. The first thing that starts to show failure signs from fluid issues is the reverse components.

it's somewhat normal in most manual trannies. Like a couple have stated reverese gear has no syncros. Dirty or incorrect tranny fluid can make this worse.
Try shifting into 4th gear then shfiting into reverse. This usually helps. Don't force the shfter into reverese if it seems like it does not want to go into gear. Try another forward gear, then reverese again.
I recommend Redline MT-90 MTF in the tranny. It is a full synthetic fluid and will help with the problems you are having. It's a great fluid for your tranny.

I flushed the fluids yesterday and it still does it.
2nd gear is becoming an issue as well sometimes.
I adjusted my clutch pedal out a couple weeks ago. It's only got about 2-2.5 threads left on the rod. Should I go out even more to see if that remedies the problem?
