Starter replacement

I'm going to be replacing the starter on my 03 EVO. I checked the How To pages and didn't find anything on this and I wanted to know if there is anything special to do other than unbolt it and bolt up the new one.

Any alignment tools, shims, or anything else needed?

Any tips?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Same problem hear too. My starter sounds like it's spinning but does not catch onto the flywheel. I have to quickly turn the key fast about half a second increments before it starts.

Just replaced mine. No you do not have to line anything up or do anything special. I would reccomend of course taking your positive side off of your battery before changing it though. I did and then after that the car fired right up so it should have no issues.

20 mins job? no way, starter is not as easy reach as the battery...

I am curious on how many miles do you all have that needed starter change? starter should last a long time.

The starter is prolly the easiest thing IMO. If you go from underneath the car, it is right there and there are 2 bolts that screw in oppsite directions( one screws into trans and one screws into starter). There are two wires. One has a nut on it and the other is just clipped on. Easy day.

Yah I was scared the bolt from the opposite direction had a nut on the end. I was thinking how the hell was I gonna get that off! But yah came right out. I did remove the tray off of the starter to get to the positive easier though. Worked great!

1. dis-connect battery
2. If you have an undertray, take it off.
3. dis-connect power supply to starter first.( 12mm nut/washer)
4. dis-connect ground supply( This wire has a connection, you can just pull it off)
5. remove 2 14mm bolts that run through starter. There is one on either side.

That should sum it up. Removing the undertray should take the longest by far.
