Weird sputter... am I "blowing out spark" Need Advice

I just got in from taking the evo out for the first time in a week or two. Car was boost leak tested yada yada before I left.

I'm out logging and AFR's were on the rich side. I pulled some fuel got it about where I wanted.. no problems.

After driving for a while a cruizing speeds I decide to get on it some to see how she pulls in 3rd and 4th gear. I get some weird sputtering where higher loads would be.. right after spool up. Of course I don't have the logger hooked up but from what I could see on my zt2 boost was solid. AFR's were going nuts.

Boost is about 28-29psi in these higher gears from 4000ish rpm pulls. I'm running BR7ES's gapped @ 0.025 and have been for some time. I don't have much to go on but here is a few things that could be happening...

- Something is getting hot and leaking boost (although boost was solid)

- My wideband sensor is getting old and is reading a lot richer than the car actually is. Car is too lean.

- I'm blowing out spark due to slightly cooler temps and higher boost.

- My HKS DL2 is dying or something is up with it.

- Something is up with my alky kit. It has new seals rebuilt by SMC. I will do a test on it tomorrow.

- The car is mad because I bought a Subaru daily driver.

I'm all ears for any tips/advice. I've had this happen before due to overboosting with a vac line that fell off. I no longer have this vac line as I removed the EGR system completely. When this happened before boost went nuts.. doesn't seem to be the case this time.

PS: I will try gapping the plugs to 0.022 and testing the alky kit tomorrow. I'll also run another leak test after driving the car for a little bit to make sure everything is nice and hot.

how come you aren't running 8's?

have you done any logs yet on 28-29 psi on a real hard high gear load? You may be hitting higher loadcells than you were before.

What are your a/f doing? spiking rich, lean, what?

I will slap in a set before I do anything else to see what happens.

The logs I did were mostly 2nd or 3rd gear... it was more for monitoring than anything.. testing out those 2nd gear brake boosting situations

I'll get a log tomorrow on the way to NAPA for plugs. AFR's looked to be around 11.2 but during during spoolup it changes to fast to see.

My car has always liked the BR7ES's over the BPR's for some reason... I'm guessing I'm doing 20-40whp more now so it may be this is to hot of a plug.

You recommend what gap on the 8's? I'm thinking I read 0.022 is pretty common.

have you tried tightenong up the gap alittle to see if it helps at all(not fix) but help to maybe condem the issue to spark.

Try putting in some BR8ES's and gap them .25.

with the dli2 you can get away with more gap that you can w/out it. On my full stock ignition on bpr8's I was running about 20-21 at 30 psi on the hp61.

I would reccomend 25 like the guy above me said, you could actually probably open it up to 28. I would try and run the highest gap that your setup will allow, to have the cleanest burn and hottest spark.

I have to change my plugs about once a month. But, when I pull them, they look fine. Change your plugs to BR8ES's and see if that helps.

Ok the 8's did the trick. Idle is a little more rough but I'm sure I can bump up the timing a bit and smooth it out. Car pulls very smooth/hard... needs tweaked on the AFR side and I wouldn't mind seeing if these will allow me to run another tick of timing

It's about 10-15* warmer out right now but I think she'll be fine tonight I did hit 30psi brake boosting in 4th gear lol

Sounds to me like a rich misfire.
How much alky are you running?
What nozzle? and how much timing are you running. If you can log it for us and post it I'll help you out. Are you on stock Computer or EMS?

8's gapped at 0.025 still working great! Not one hiccup since installation. Something was up with the gaps on the 7's one was less than .025 one was .025 and two were probably .030 -- not sure how I did that.

I'd consider this case closed I finished my tune tonight

Well.... all was good.....

SMC Alky kit appears to be dead (2nd time). Power LED is on. Test does nothing and it doesn't spray (no afr change). Thank god I keep a close eye on things or this would be my 2nd blown motor due to SMC alky kit failures.
