Transmission Cooler

Is there anyway to integrate a tranny cooler to my IX MR? I already had the transmission go out on me twice already, i'm guessing primarily due to the lesser amount of oil capacity compared to the 5-speeds, and i'm not looking forward to replacing it again. If anyone has done it already, please let me know how, how much it cost, and what brand, etc. Thanks, your info is much appreciated.

DSMers have done cooling systems that use the fill and drain bolt holes, a pump, and a cooler. This also has the obvious side benfit of increasing total fluid capacity. You might want to talk to Shep about it, I seem to remember him getting involved in some of this.

Yes there are a few hardcore r/c drivers that use the ARC Trans cooler which is very over priced. They also make Diff coolers as well.

But if you where to pick one up it would cost around $700 in parts with the core, fittings, ss lines.

Now as far as mounting it to the trans and all that. You have to tap into the trans to run the lines and mod radiator or lines to get coolant to the core.

I would look around and see what some of the Porsche & BMW guys run. Or if there is a shop that builds road race cars around your area they would be able to tell you better what you need to get what you want.

You can run lines to the fill and drain bolts.

Or, if you have the tranny out for a rebuild already, get two bungs welded in. One right above 4th gear to spray cooled oil onto the gear. This is what I had done when TRE rebuilt my 6.

Mocal/tilton makes the pump:

A small square(ish) cooler will fit in front of the radiator and you can run lines to/from that, the pump and the transmission.
