Decceleration noise with my Evo
I tried searching but didn't really find what my problem was.
I have a weird decceleration noise that sounds like someone shaking a wooden bottle with a plastic ball in it. It also has that hollow tune to it. It's kinda subtle but not too subtle. You have to turn the radio off and roll the windows up to hear it. That's the best I can describe it as, and its irregular too. My car is brand new and has never been redlined or abused, and this is my first manual car, so I don't know if it's normal or not. Does this sound like something I should take into the dealer for?

join the club dude. A bunch of us, including me are going through the same exact experience. Believe it or not...the dealers are saying its normal. I noticed mine at 300 miles.
I'm at 6000 now and it hasn't gotten any worse.
But...you should take it in anyways, get it checked just to be sure and documented.

Completely normal, unless it is really loud. My last car, Eclipse GSX, which was also AWD has the same type of noise. It got worse and really loud when the trans went bad. But again, that was at 80,000+ miles... It is normal to Mitsu AWD cars. That's the way it is....

I'm pretty sure my car has the same noise. It seems to only happen when I do it in 5th gear, though. I was doing a little testing today on the way in to work. A deceleration in 4th didn't seem to produce the noise. Is your noise happening in every gear?
In any case, it's been happening since I got the car (7500+ miles and over 3 months ago), and I've kind of written it off as normal. Every once in a while I get a little paranoid, but I'm pretty sure it's normal.

Back when I was interested in the S2000, I would read that the early ones had a decceleration noise, but Honda sent out a TSB fix for it. You think Mitsubishi would do the same?

My Evo just had the transmission replaced and the new tranny makes a slight deceleration noise too (not nearly as bad as before the tranny replacement thank gosh).
I think it's par for the course, for our tranny.

I have 12,000 miles on my EVO and I had the same problem which got worse as the miles went up. I had it looked at by the Mitsu service Dept. and they found that it was the throw-out bearing in the clutch. It has been replaced and the noise is gone.

I have the same noise, I just bought the car, and it started making noise around the 300 mile mark, sounds like a dropping a penny in a plastic cup and rattling it around....
Should I go have the throwout bearing replaced?

Yeah spyder... I'm starting to hear it a bit under acceleration as well... It could just be me being parinoid though.
As far as the tsb from honda goes, I gave a copy to my regional rep to submit to mitsu as part of a product quality request. He just dismissed it though and said it wasn't relevant even though the symptoms are pretty much identical. Its honda s2000 tsb 057. do a search (google, not on this site) and you will find a pdf copy.
Also take a look at the "transmission failure" thread on this site... I have sound clip posted of my decel noise about half way through the thread. Do take it in and have it noted.. also call 1-888-mitsu-2003 select the "help with your mitsu vehicle" and ask for the vehicles department. Bottom line is the more people complain the better chance there is that mitsu will find a way to address the issue.
