You should just go with a 9 turbo and get the kit to install it on your 8. With the 9 you will see at least 40 whp more than an 8 turbo. Your best bet would be to get a FP green turbo but there pretty pricey.

As the others have said that turbo is a replacement for your stock turbo. The '03 (& 04?) Evo VIII have that turbo with a 9.8 hotside so for them it is a small upgrade.

In your case a stock Evo 9 or FP Green turbo (with mounting kit) would be a bolt-on + tune upgrade.

From an 8 to a 9 turbo won't give you 40+whp with basic bolt-on's with the same psi.

LOL

On a serious note, for my mild goals of about 320whp, should I spend the extra cash on the IX turbo? Or just stick with an VIII with a 10.5 hotside?

Adding the 10.5 hotside to the stock 8 turbo does add some lag. Not alot but just enough that I could feel it on the street. While I made good power up top for track days, I did loose some of my original super quick torque.

Considering how inexpensively a used Evo 9 turbo can be purchased, that would be a much better upgrade. To install it on an Evo 8, you need the turbo oil & coolant lines that are different between an 8 & 9 as well as the turbo compressor outlet pipe from an Evo 9. And the supporting gaskets. All of this is available in the typical "Evo 8 install kit" or can be pieced together from your local Mitsubishi parts department.
