2.3 or 2.4 stroker + Big Turbos (Describe Driving Experience)

This is a call out to all the guys who drive the stroker + big turbos (35r, 37r,42r) to post driving experiences i.e. turbo lag, acceleration, low range, midrange, and up top. Basically as much information to assist others in their purchase and to avoid others from buying unnecessary upgrades that don't meet their driving description or performance objective.

I read numerous posts about guys buying big turbos and hating the lag (lack of research) and recently read a post of someone running a Green turbo with a 2.3 at less than optimal PSI for such turbo making less power than expected. It is clear that some members are finding their ideall set up at a larger financial cost than they should by trial and error. I believe that ultimately a stroker kit would be the ideal base for many applications as it affords the bigger displacement for low end and enough juice to push big turbos within an usable rpm range. All posts will be appreciated.

do you want a drag set-up, a street set-up, a road course or autocross car?

you should really do a little more research before posting a thread like this. regardless i have a less than ideal set-up for my car. the 2.4l where i should have gone with the slight overbore 2.1 lr. and a 4088 where i may not have had a problem, but i dont know how efficent it would be with the long rod. either way, for us to get a big turbo spooling lower without the use of nitrous is gonna take a short rod ratio (2.3 or 2.4) where more air lower is the name of the game and it will take a good flowing head with well designed intake and exhaust manifolds to help your spool. one better for overall power and drag set-up would be a motor you can make scream past 9K with a turbo kicking on at 4k and full spool by 5500 or something similar. again thats your turbo size, a/r selection, and supporting mods that i discussed above.

im at work and not revising this right now, ill look at it later and hope i didnt fork anything up!

Perhaps I could have included to post where your car shines and where it lacks according to your set up of choice. As far as having a car for drag, autocross, or street, my objective was to get responses from various sources describing the behavior of their cars including daily driving. Hopefully this can help me isolate which set ups are more likely to shine in a drag strip vs a road course and maybe both. Also hope to eliminate which set ups are less effective on the street. I honestly wish I could be taken on a test ride of stroked evos with different turbos from shops but I don't have that luxury hence the reason for this thread.

what I've read from buschur racing is that they convince people to a 2.0 build if they are going to a 35r or larger. the reason being is that the bigger turbos love the higher rpms that the stroker motors cant produce.

Its all relative i think.....

With our cars there are so many options to go with that its really up to you. (not like some cars where there are only one or two companies that make X product for X hp and thats all you get). Our cars have made up to 1000 hp with all the different setups in between.

I personally have a 2.3L with a PT67 with Jun cams and etc........ I dont have a lag problem and power pulls all the way to redline at 8500.

If anything my car is more like a loud race car on the street with the lumpy idle and all the squeeling from the clutch. I cant even be heard at the drive through at BK or Micky D's. I always have to drive to the front window. But i like my car just how it is and i wouldnt change it. But it may not suit someone else.

Man, I love my car. It's a Buschur 2.3l with a t67 turbo running 23 psi making 500whp on pump. On meduim boost it makes 600whp and we haven't had a chance to turn the boost all the way up because of the clutch slipping.

The lag is not bad at all. Lag is really overrated IMO because by the time this SOB spools you've already forgot about it.

The car just SCREAMS! The stroker with a 35R or 37R is the perfect street setup. Anything bigger than those turbos is just too big for the street.

How could you not be happy with 500whp on pump gas or run methanol/water/alcohol injection and have even more.

The only downside? I personally want more. After driving it for a month or so, you will want more. Its an addiction, passion, or whatever you want to call it. I need more to feed my adrenalin rush.

I'm getting nitrous bungs welded into my AMS manifold so that is my next step. Imagine a 2.3l and t67 with a 150 direct port shot. THATS RIGHT BABY!

id have to say that its also an opinion to say running anything bigger than a GT37 (i looked just to verify- its not a ball bearing turbo) is too big. i.e. a twin scroll 4088R or 4094R. depending on your hotside a/r selection and twin scroll set-up i bet i either come close to if not spool faster than your single scroll 35r with no meth. your intake manifold, exhaust manifold, hotside A/R, (meth), cams, fuel, nitrous, head flow, rod ratio all play a hand in making a car run well with which turbo you select.

i for one have a stupid set-up for anything but running for fun on the street or weekends at the drag strip. a 2.4l would be best served with a small 35r or a big 30r on an autocross course or a small tight curcuit. i wont be the guy you catch at leguna seca running his car full throttle over 120mph knowing its an inefficient application for that style of racing.

its all down to driving preference, as the man said above, his 2.4 setup would be crap round a track like seca with that sized turbo, a car running a stock engine and green would be posting better times! but as a fun/weekend car there is nothing wrong with the above setup, infact id quite like it myself, really depends what you want.

I like this post! I've been thinking the same thing. I daily drive my car with the occassional track visit on the weekend. I've ridden in a 2.0 with a 35r and it scared the shoot out of me, but the lag was very noticiable. For me, I'm not sure this kind of set-up would work. I'm really thinking of doing a 2.3 with a 35r as I think it would make a more efficient daily driver. I could still have fun at the track but I'm sure I'll miss some of the top power band. I guess you can't have the best of both worlds all the time. (Quicker spool or higher RPMs)....

excellent thread . I am thinking about a stroker motor soon so i am thinking about going with a 2.3 L stroker with my 57 trim. I think it will be a fun ride once its done. Great thread everyone .

a 2.3 stroker with a 37R turbo on race gas would be the ultimate setup. Get the stroker to spool like a 35R on 2.0 and have the benefits of the extra 50-75 whp on the 37R. The 37Rs are proven to go deep into the 9's in the 1/4 while still be able to do high way pulls. I dont know how good that setup would be on a track though.

My friend has a 2 liter with a GT40 turbo and just revs the **** out of it. It seems that most of the huge HP guys use the 2.0 or the 2.1 like AMS and just rev the **** out of it!
