Talking So i went over to Extreme Turbo Systems today( Wife not knowing)

So ive been bugging JR over at ETS about doing Water to Air intercooler for me. They been doing them on the Supras and Turbo Fords.
What i love about what there designing for me is it will be a all in one unit and the only item that will be mounted right by is the heavy duty marine pump.
Here are pics of the unit we are going to base our design off of

Ice goes into the top. You can see where the water sprays out onto the ice

Here is where the pump hooks into

Pumps water from bottom to top than the water goes(a sprinkler system) and comes back down thru the ice gets the water to contact the ice.
Whats nice is the ice is in direct contact with the water in the intercooler.
Use a heavy duty marine pump with 1” pipe and pumps continuously. They used this design on 1300hp plus cars which gives them 60-69deg charge air temps on their testing. This was when it was 95 deg outside.

Some other pics i took

Now if my wife knew i snuck over there i would have to say goodbye to my evo You guys can only imagine how much time i spend on my race car

Ive asked about doing the water to air intercooling and i didnt get a very good response. Which i didnt see why just in general it should be better than air to air. Ive been looking at a few kits. But the one their building you definitely shows its for a 1000+ hp car that thing is monsterous.

Soooo, are they going to make you one? I've wondered for quite a while, why no-one has done this for our cars.

Yes we are working on it right now. AMS is using a water to air intercooler on there drag car. What nice is during the summer hot days i can keep temps down in the 60deg range. Im always pushing my turbo past its efficiency range so i generate much more heat

So it just cycles the water from the bottom to the top? There's no external radiator for the water? I thought there had to be heat exchanger for the water too, well, I guess if it was DD street car thing that would make more sense. But for a pure drag car, never mind. I think I figured it out on my own .

Cool intercooler!!

Air to air rarely can cool lower than ambient (outside) temp.

For drag racing, the ice and water mix can remove much more heat from the charge than air could, and you don't have as much heat soak potential either.

For prolonged use, the ice/water version is not useful, as eventually the ice and water have absorbed as much heat as they can. In those situations, one would use a water to air setup with a radiator and water pump to circulate and recool the water, or an air-to-air intercooler, which has no moving parts.
