Check the maf air sensor. Is it plugged in? If the MAF isnt reading properly it will throw the car into limp mode. Pouring HUGe ammounts of fule, raising the EGT temps and thus creating an easy spool.

The extra fuel from limp mode would also cause your car to be VERY slow on accleration.
