15w-50
Does anyone see any problems with me running Mobil1 supersyn 15W-50? I would like to go to a higher protecting oil before I run the car on a road course for two days. It currently only has 2000 miles on it.

I run Mobil1 15w50 in my Lancer. Works fine. Little heavy, yes, but in summer heat it's been performing much smoother than the 10w30 I'd been running. It should be fine on an Evolution as well, especially in hot weather. I'd change back to 10w30 for winter though if you enjoy being able to start your car easily.

I already asked this question.
I will not be using 15w-50.
The manuel says 10w-30. (warranty)
15w-50 is too thick to flow into tight tolerances of new engines.
Old, worn engines have bigger gaps for oil to flow into.
My 2 cents

My concern is that I'll be beating the hell out of it for two days. Hard running plus summer temps calls for better protection.
For warranty purposes the manual recommends a ILSAC GF-3 rated synthetic oil. Which it is. It also says you can use a 20W-40 as long as the temps never get below freezing (0C/32F) I believe Mitsu would have put in a 40 oil if it wasn't for EPA wanting to get that extra 0.25mpg out of it. I posted a while back asking what the Euro Evo's oil was...30 or 40...but no one had responded.
WRX owners have used the 15W-50 with out problems. I know this isn't at all the same motor, but I'm just using it as reference.

The 15w50 isnt necessarily a thicker oil per say. Its a multiblend oil that has the characteristics to start up in the cold and handle tremendously high temperatures. I wouldnt go as far as calling it "thick" as you would just a regular 50 or 60 weight oil.
Cladius and all the other UK/Germany/Sweden/Japan guys are running Castrol 10w60 which in the US is only available from the BMW dealerships for $11.60 a Liter!! (Yes, eleven dollars and sixty cents, can you see $60+ oil changes!!)
Anyhow, I would put some of that oil in, if I was going to track my car. Since I just abuse it on the street, i stick with Amsoil 10w30.

According to Mobil1's website (and which I expected anyway) their 15W-50 formula EXCEEDS Mitsu's specs
"Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 15W-50 is factory fill in Ford Mustang Cobra R.
And
Exceeds API SL/CF.
Exceeds ACEA A3/B3/B4-02."
And here's some evidence as why I think Mitsu chose the 10W-30
"Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 10W-30 is designed for passenger cars and light trucks with gasoline or diesel engines. It also exceeds "Energy Conserving" ratings. "
It's the 'Energy Conserving' part that points me to my theory. Other specs on the 10W-30 point towards oil stability, fuel economy, cold start performance and extended drain intervals. Makes it sound to me like a good all around oil, no doubt. The stability helps with the extended drain intervals...once again scratching the EPA's back. The 40's don't have the stability factor and should be changed every 3000 miles vs. the 5000 miles recommended by Mitsu with the 30.
Like I've said before, there's Euro cars running 40's factory when the exact same car is in the U.S. running 30's....why...EPA.
Or anybody recall the 20's that were being ran in the USA and engines blowing up left and right?

Valvoline has a little different spread of synthetics. BTW, their 10W-30 Synpower is right up there with Mobil1. It 'meets and exceeds' the GL-3 specs required. I'm not recommending it but their Synpower line is a very good competitor although frequently overlooked. Current product line:
5W-30
5W-40
10W-30
20W-50
...good luck finding anything besides 10W-30. The Synpower is all I run in my Infiniti's because of their high detergency. With 120K+ miles on both Infiniti's the internals have VERY minimal sludge build up. Very clean, you'd think it was a brand new motor. Varnished internals aren't even present, now that's impressive.

Just go to the Beemer dealerships and get Castrol RS 10w60.
Its the best money can buy. The only certified oil for the M3 and M5. It only comes in Liters, because its not even made in the states.
