Serious Help w/ Timing Belt

i installed my GSC S1 Mivec Camshafts a couple weeks ago and last week i noticed a whining noise coming from the cam gear cover. i finally got around to checking my timing belt and look what i find (my car has 7.7k miles).

one part of the timing belt has a deeper tear about 3 centimeters long. was pretty sure that everything was properly timed because the TDC marks on the cam gears and mivec cover matched up, but i was obviously wrong because my timing belt was perfect before i changed my camshafts. is my only course of action getting my timing belt replaced? if so, does anybody have any recommendations on a particular timing belt or should the oem one be fine?

i'm pretty sure i slipped a tooth on the crank sprocket because i had the timing belt zip tied to the cam gears, but my dumba$$ tried rotating the crank when i had the timing belt tool screwed in! i only rotated the crank 1/4 before i realized that the timing belt tool was still screwed in and i tried rotating the crank back another 1/4. i guess it didnt work.

well i'm pretty sure the warranty is voided because i installed all of the mods in my sig by myself. nothing else could've caused the timing belt to start to shred like that unless it was not properly timed right?

The engine in the evo is an interference motor meaning if the timing belt lets go, you are going to pacman the valves. I would not drive the car anymore until the problem with the timing belt is found. It looks as if an idler let go and the remaining bit is chewing the belt up.

It is not shredding, it is rubbing on something. I'd guess that you either installed a cover bolt in the wrong place or the belt was way loose.

running on a damaged timing belt is not a good idea. If it lets go, there is a possiblity of major engine damage.

The timing belt has two covers, a top and a bottom. When you remove the top cover, the bottom cover will catch and hold anything you drop into it. Did you by chance drop anything (like a bolt) down in there that could be rubbing on the belt when the motor is running? That's what it looks like to me. A belt that is not in time won't cause that rub.

Dont drive it!

Replace belts and you will eventually find whatever you did, and prepare for a job about 3 times more work than cams.

This kind of damage used to be common on DSMs, because there were two shorter bolts securing the oil pan under the timing belt, and people who didn't know that would just put in the bolts anywhere in the oil pan thinking they were all the same length. When the longer bolts got put in under the belt, they'd cause similar damage to the pictures shown.

If you damaged the belt with a bolt that you didn't remember to release, your solution is to buy a new belt and replace the timing belt that you damaged. That's pretty simple.

This is the retarded metality that causes Mitsu to void warranties at a whim. He took something apart, replaced a component, put it back together incorrectly; at no point should Mitsu have to warranty that timing belt.

People try to claim stupid things, and Mitsu has to take an extreme stance on warranty work. Grow up.
