Project FQ-400

I believe the FQ400 uses a GT3540, but Im not sure. The amount of high dollar parts that are being used on the FQ400, minus the wheels....um....and the wheels.....can b e substituted for products, lower in cost and higher in performance.
Im sure if I tallied the cost of all those FQ400 parts, it would cost a fortune next to some decent parts produced by our favorite tuners and would outrun any FQ400.

Actually thats a good question... Before I buy a turbo and manifold... I really am in the process of researching the best one for the application. I want a LOT faster spool than the FQ400's, however, I also want something that will (in hopes) one day produce 500-550whp incase my thirst begins to grow.
Oh also.. I live in NYC, going with a test pipe IS an option, but I'll get jail time. I can risk it, but knowing the A-hole cops out here that were bullied through elementary, and now have a badge and guns..... I don't want to risk it.
Thanks for all of the support and feedback guys... I thought this thread was either going to bring a lot of negativity, or no replies at all! I guess forum lovers have changed these days!
I will DEFINITELY keep everyone posted... Today my dual pillar steering column pod came in, the innovate wideband A/F is going on the left, and the STRI Tinted Boost gauge (which also came in) is going on the right... will have pictures soon!
Mind you I really want to tackle the ECU tuning myself. I know I really should not, but I'm one of those idiots that like to tackle long tedious tasks on his own, only because when something goes wrong, I'm that much more aware of where it could be coming from. But I totally agree. Who knows... I may get it initially tuned by someone else, and then fine tune the knocks and A/F on my own. We'll see how lazy I am these holidays.. Plus, it sure is cold up here in NY now, we had some snow fall and I haven't gotten winter tires!!! anyone selling?
Talk to you guys soon!

Part 2: Surgery
So here are the updates.... All is installed, and my car is running DEAD rich... it took me 3 days to install this in my 2 car garage with basic tools 1 of those days ALONE was the friggin innovate LC1 + XD16 kit. I canNOT believe how picky the ground is for the LC1 unit. You almost HAVE to bolt it down to solid steel frame, or your engine block for it to even power on and send the XD16 gauge a signal. Otherwise you will just see: -.-.- Anyway.... So theres black smoke all over my bumper... and im bogging out at 6k rpm. (i did a quick pass in 3rd gear just to see what I'm dealing with. I think the majority of the rich running is my 750cc's spitting puddles on the pistons LOL.
As you look at the pictures below, note that the Invidia turbo outlet housing is probably the biggest housing you can find at 2.7" for the stock turbo HOWEVER it is the BIGGEST pain in the **** to install the darn thing. I had to shave down one of the studs that was on the turbo so that this housing can fit without the stud hitting the outside of the housing. you will see in some of the pictures what I'm talking about. You may think it can go on without shaving down the stud.. but truth is, not only will you not be able to get the leverage to tighten the nut, but you will more than likely have an exhaust leak. SPEAKING of which, I now have a minor exhaust leak. Possibly from the downpipe. I had to shave down the donut that came with the turbo XS downpipe (the inner circle) in order to fit it on the massive Invidia. It must have decreased its ability to seal, and now theres a small exhaust leak somewhere from that area of the car. Could be the turbo outlet itself. Not to mention>>>>>>>>>>>> This outlet forces you to extend the o2 sensor harness wires. (i extended the actual sensors wires, not the harness) I tried pulling it out of the harness but I didnt want wires lying over my head and header at least its 2.5lbs lighter than stock.
The turbo XS downpipe was 5-6 lbs lighter than stock. The highflow cat was another 2-3 lbs lighter. 10 lbs shaved right there.
The injen intercooler piping kit is harder than you'd imagine to put in. You'd look at it and think that it would be harder to take the front bumper off. HOWEVER, the bumper is only 6 bolts, 2 clips, and 2 snap in clips that DON'T break (thank god) easily. once you take off that bumper, the lower intercooler pipe is 200% easier to install. note that if you are doing a downpipe, do the downpipe first. The lower IC pipe will get in your way otherwise.
Injectors were a snap, pun intended
high flow cat seemed to be a little short in conjunction with the turbo XS downpipe, I think it pulled my whole cat back exhaust in about 1 or 2 inches, (which will look good once I get the JDM bumper )
Fuel pump (under the rear left seat) was easier than it looked. Plus I LOVE the smell of gas
The STRI boost gauge was a snap.. MAKE SURE U READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. do not put the sensor facing up or to the side, aim it down. Your gauge will not work correctly. Has a brilliant warning light, and a quick switch that tells you your highest boost point since your car has been on. See pictures for where i mounted the gauge and button.
The LC1 + XD16 kit was difficult, but I LOVE where I installed the OUT port for logging your A/F ratio to your laptop, See pictures for location on the pod.
I ended up going with the injen MAF adapter, (was larger, even though the other looked nicer and was more polished)
The blow off valve (Perrin re circulatory RED like the valve cover) sounds GREAT. its an amplified version of the stock evo 9 MR BOV, but with a little whistle at the end. I set it to be fairly soft, hard seems to flutter, and its rather harsh on your driving when you are easing OFF of the gas.
I think after this tune (hoping for 360awhp) I'll get a set of high flow headers for the stock turbo, then a pair of 272 cams, a modest intercooler upgrade, arp head studs, and possibly a 20g titanium turbo. But I believe that will be after the brake and suspension upgrading.
I'm probably going to get my first initial tune done at turbo trix in NJ. and the rest myself. The programs run great. I'm still tinkering with getting the A/F input from the LC1. EvoScan is excellent. ECU flash couldn't be better.
Let me know what you think , here are the pics! any feedback, negative or positive is welcome (positive preferred LOL )

Free up the exhaust, put some TEL racegas in there, turn up the boost, put the diverter valve on backwards, get a stiff WGA, tune it - and there you go, you'll be just as fast if not faster than any pumpgas fq-400
#27
It will drive like crap but the boost will actually assist it in holding boost
It will sound stupid (but better than any VTA rice) kinda like Star Trek sound effects, but it won't leak any boost at all.
Might self destruct too with continued use but this just for a temporary 3.8 sec 0-60 which is better than the FQ. Oh yeah, raise limiter to 8000rpm too

I would have bought a Titek O2 housing. Better separation of the exhaust gases, and no exhaust leak.
The Injen IC pipes work if you cut off 3/4 of an inch off the turbo outlet pipe. Just retain the second rolled part of the out let pipe so the coupler doesn't blow off, and the lower IC pipe will fit perfect, and flow better too.
I would have also stuck with the stock Diverter Valve, for driveability and better performance.
Also, make sure you have good clamps. The one's that came with the Injen kit are alright, but if you're going to be boosting big, I would stretch for better clamps for that extra bit of reliability.
You should be really close to your goal. Good Luck

For the suspension (semi street/race setup): I'm looking at Tein mono flex. Adjustable height (without adjusting the spring rate). Adjustable spring rate, and adjustable dampening. Then I'll get the camber plates.
Bars: DC titanium (the lightest possible) for front upper/rear upper
Anti Roll: Don't know yet, I'm going to look into the weight again (I'm a weight reduction fanatic, even if it's a few pounds).
Also: I forgot to mention that to get that Turbo XS downpipe in, you have to remove two stiffener bars under the car. I guess I can replace it with the 6 point cusco stiffener.
Anyone have any bushing kits in mind that are beneficial?
As for braking, I'm just going to upgrade the fluid, and go with the big brake 6 piston brembo front, and 4 piston rear. I believe the FQ400 has 6 front/4 rear. I was looking at a close up shot of the FQ, and saw the front caliper showed three humps on one side as opposed to our evo's two.
Let me know what you guys think... or if you have any ideas that would be better while keeping bang for buck in mind.

Not sure that you need the 750cc injectors... I would look into the stock dv valve and maybe into a 3'' 02 housing from buschur, titek, etc. Ported exhaust manifold would also help with flow characteristics. Cams are definitely not needed for your goal.
